“I already knew things are bad. But when (Gene Smith asking for donations) happened I was like oh my gosh this is like Defcon 3 level."

"There was a young man, I was told he was given three years, $750k. A senior recruit, five star. Wanted to come to Ohio State, didn't even need Ohio State to match the offer…just needed it to be somewhere in the ballpark, maybe even half. And Ohio State couldn't do it. So they lost out on a kid who wanted to be a Buckeye because he was bought for $750k.

So uGa got the kid for 1.8 million along with $800k/year?

At what point will the good ol’ boy boosters get sick of ponying up so much $$$ every year?

Big ööööing cry for that kid. If he wanted to be a Buckeye so bad then he could have done what people used to do and sign a LOI without needing an endorsement.

Idk it’s not the same as the Texas Oil money where you can just pump more out of the ground.

We don’t have the popularity to compete. When every Tom, Dick, and Harry small business owner is a fan of the big state school we will not be able to fork over the cash these people can spend to brag to their neighbors about it. And I don’t want us to.

Dead on! I saw an update in the monthly AARP mag that they ( along with 4 uga players including Stinson )have launched a program warning Georgia citizens to beware of scams! So I can assume that AARP is doling out money to the uga NIL

Good ol’ boys? That article says school are driving for every day fan to contribute. On top of booster priority point donations, seat license costs, ticket costs, general academic donations, and general athletic fund donations.

To a sport where in droves they’re finding it easier to disconnect themselves from actually showing up and cheering in the stands.

This sport is dying.

But it then also becomes transactional as well. Losses are not only emotionally draining but fiscally as well. Anger is faster and harder. Patience is less and less. Any sort of academic retribution is met with immediate pushback from the school fanbase at large. Coaches are fired after 1 maybe 2 seasons. In short it’s professional football.

It's even worse than professional football because there is direct financial pressure on fans to fund their own team. It's miserable.

Haha right all the costs none of the actual financial benefit. I guess this is how NASCAR functioned for a long time.

I guess next we will have college uniforms with Pete’s Stop And Shop plastered on them.

I return to you from my monthly NIL debate bludgeoning at the hands of my staunchly capitalist brother and Ohio State fan relatives for support in this fight to purify college athletics.

I agree, something will change in the next two or three years. This isn't sustainable.
I feel like this has been said for years though. It may still be true but where that line is may be starting to get scary.

Just like I decided years ago that I wasn’t going to let a bunch of 17-20-something year olds playing a damned game ruin my weekends, I’ve also decided that I’m not going to pay money to the pockets of a bunch of 17-20-something year olds playing a damned game. They already get preferential treatment over other students who are actual students, and that should be enough.

It’s a damned game. My self worth isn’t tied up in whether my college team wins football games. It makes me happy, but it’s not where I get my identity.
