It's not that our players aren't good enough, they're just extremely dumb

I hate this question usually, but I have to ask it here. Have you ever actually played o-line in a game environment?

Sometimes you have no idea that you're holding.

I have and you're right. But when the coach says, "OK, guys, we've got this game in the bag if you don't make a mistake so don't hold, spindle or mutilate." Then it makes you more alert and careful.

I wonder if any of our coaches said that today.

Not the case here though --that was a takedown --sort of behind the play too.

The takedown was fine, the problem was his hand being outside the other player's shoulders.

I'm not forgiving the hold here at all, but Beej is going on and on about how dumb our players our and I have a very strong feeling that he has absolutely no idea how fast stuff is happening down on the field.

I'll freely admit I've never played O-Line, but I know I was sitting at a bar with 3 other guys and me and JTS were saying "All we have to do is not hold on this play and we win" and we held. Called it before the play. Didn't mind the run call. Just prayed we didn't hold. And we held.

Just. Don't. Cheat. For 1 play. 1.

That's all we had to do to win. We didn't need to complete a circus catch, we didn't need to run for a million yards, we didn't need to do any of that stuff. All we had to do was NOT HOLD.

This is like when Joe Burns ran out of bounds trying to run the clock out vs Maryland in Fridge's first season. Same Fin thing. Dumb dumb dumb.

Holding on that play was way worse than Burns running out of bounds because Maryland had to drive in order to get into field goal range with like 50 seconds left. Holding practically gave the game away. It turned us from about a 4 to 1 favorite to win to a 1 to 4 underdog. All we had to do was not hold or fumble and we win 80%+ of the time. We did not need to get a single yard.

And how do you run the ball on 3rd down there? Even if you get a decent run, you're leaving your kicker with a 47 yd + field goal. Your QB's been playing great the entire second half gets you to the point where you have a chance to win and you take the game away from him?

There's no "I" in "TEAM", but there is in "QUIT". Thanks for quitting on our team coaching staff.

Yup. And the Joe Burns OOB play ranked among the dumbest things ever done by a player wearing a GT uniform. This was dumber.

Both gave Fridge wins.

In addition, if you are dumb enough to call a run play on 3rd down from the 35 yard line, you could at least hand it off to your All-Conference RB instead of his backup.

I'll defend Gardner

Is this his first holding penalty ALL YEAR? If we only had 2 per line position in 2007, I'd be ecstatic. The powers all say AG will be playing on Sundays; he just picked a terrible time to HOLD.

And, by itself, it didn't LOSE the game.

Quit calling our players dumb, Beej...

You would be an idiot to not know your were holding. It's called keeping your hands inside. I have taught it all year long, it's not that hard to understand.

Responding to Ringold in this thread instead of his knockoff, to reduce board clutter:

BEEJ67, Does it help you cope By continuing to call our O-Line DUMB? calling Andrew Gardner DUMB? referring to the hold DUMB?

Get a fricking grip; AG is an awesome OT, one who will play for years. Yeah, he got caught at a TERRIBLE time but the boy aint DUMB.

You truly cannot really think that single HOLD penalty all by itself LOST the game.
There are those who would defend Joe Burns for running out of bounds like a dumbass vs Maryland in 2002 while trying to run out the clock. George O'Leary wasn't one of them. These were his words, as best as I can recall:

"That's just the kind of bone headed play that lets the other team win."

Refreshing your memory:

And yeah, that was DUMB too.

The players are not dumb. You think that they don't know it was a bad play and they shouldn't have done it? It was an undisciplined play. You could blame the players for being undisciplined, no doubt, but this has also been a recurring problem for our teams under Gailey.

Our players aren't stupid though. Stupid would be consciously making a late hit after a play, not getting called for a penalty during a play.

You are correct. I shouldn't have said the players are dumb. That was a mistake, and posted in haste.

I should have said It's not that our players aren't good enough, they're just extremely boneheaded.

And now u are posting not in "haste" but like an ASSWIPE.

Gardner's not a bonehead. Nor did the 1 single play lose the game.

Ok ok ok. Just for you:

That was just the kind of boneheaded play that lets the other team win.

That's as much as George toned it back, so it's as far as I'll go for today.

beej67,

I just want to make sure I'm clear about this. You can't tell a QB like Suggs, "DON'T throw an interception.", but it's okay to tell a lineman, "DON'T hold."

Got it. Thanks.

One is easier than the other.

I think we know OL play a little bit better than you, Mover. ;)

I know, I'm still learning. I'm not so pissed at the OL who held as I am the situation we were in.

A lot of frustration is coming out today. These players are big boys and lets hope that they have a handle on the situation in the locker room or this season could get very ugly.

Huh?

You can certainly tell Suggs "DON'T throw an interception." Chan did that. Suggs still threw the interception. He never started another game for Tech. That interception was the kind of boneheaded play that loses you football games. (sticking to the apparently acceptable parlance for Page 4)
