Good call. He would have been something really special had he stayed healthy. The one game against Clemson I believe, he played as well as any RB I have ever seen.

Lavette scoring the winning TD in Tuscaloosa against #1 Alabama in his first game as a freshman was pretty cool too :)

Remember the scenes in the Matrix or XMen where the one guy would come after the other guy and the other guy would de-materialize and re-materialize on the other side of the first guy? That was Lavette.

Lavette made some of the best 8-12 yard runs was what I remembered about him. He went to my high school in Cartersville and from what I hear still lives close by.

I don't want to keep blathering on about the guy but, to me, he is the best pure running back I've seen in a Tech uniform.

Course you mean “in Birmingham” against bama.

Robert made probably the greatest 10 yard (appx) run I have ever seen when he did it vs Clemson (1984?) to help us keep possession of the ball and eventually win the game.

I saw two impressive catches. The fingertip grab over the shoulder at about 36s is very nice. The one at about 0:30s where he adjusts to the ball while it's in the air is even more impressive. He makes it look very easy and smooth.

It is just wrong to be negative about Tech getting a four star that got offers from teams like Alabama, LSU etc. Life does suck, and being born means you lose. But, it is fun to win the bridge championship, even on the Titanic. All our problems are not solved, but no sane person can be anything but ecstatically happy about our recruiting.

ok, for all you new guys, get your pens and paper ready to learn what Robert Lavette did for our program in the early 1980s.

In his first game, we played #1 Alabama in Birmingham - there isn't much footage but the game is on YouTube. We won thanks to an amazing run by Lavette late in the 4th quarter.

So think about this for a minute: In 1980, GT was the worst team in D1 and the dwags were the best in D1. In 1981, Clemson beat the dwags to be the #1 team in the nation.

So between 1980 and 1983, we had 3 national champions on our schedule. But we had Robert Lavette. Imagine trying to tackle a puff of smoke. That is what is was like trying to tackle Robert Lavette. Here is another snippet.

So for all you new guys, take note of the guy who blazed the trail. The guy who, after all the amazing backs that Dodd had, re-wrote the record books. The guy who simply could not be tackled on first contact. Check out his records and think about whose records be broke.

Something for you to bookmark for later is this: dwags at GT 1985.

Eddie Lee Ivery gained 1,562 yards in 11 games in 1978. He gained 356 yards against Air Force in the snow. First round draft choice by the Packers. Does anyone know what he is doing now?
