Jaybo Shaw = starting QB?

Anybody else thinks this feels alot like 5 years ago when Reggie got the job when everyone else was expecting Bilbo to get it?

No. Nesbitt is head and shoulders above Shaw in practice. Its not even close.

Yep, IIRC, Ball was performing the best in practice. Bilbo was assumed to be the start because of his experience mainly, not because he was ripping it up in practice.

Ding ding.

Ball was a shock because nobody had really heard anything to the effect of him being a leading candidate for the job. When it was announced I remember people posting and asking "Who?" and for reports on how he had played in practice.

When the reports came in, the words "Small, fast, cannon" were the most prominent and everyone said "Joe Jr. is in the house, folks." and it went from there.

We've known about Josh's talent throughout the spring and just a slight hint from seeing him play last year.

This is Josh's team. He has became a leader over the summer. Jaybo can run the option, he's got to work on arm strength though, there are just throws he can't make right now.

I don't think we have the resources to redshirt Jaybo this year, unless we're writing our season off. Nesbitt will need a reliable backup. We could probably redshirt Tevin though, which would give us 4 good option QBs on our depth chart next year - Nesbitt(jr), Shaw(so), Washington(rfr), and that new recruit that runs the Wing T in high school(fr). That's good bracketing. I expect more than 1 QB to see the field in this offense, honestly, with the kind of hits they're likely to take.

i can see us maybe using a redshirt on Jaybo next year, if we have another good second option behind Nesbit, but to do it this year might be tough!

I don't recall when or where it was quoted, but I seem to remember CPJ saying he didn't expect to be able to use many redshirts for four years (when it's only his players in the system).

That makes sense. He wants to get his guys on the field ASAP. Can't blame the guy for that.

:laugher: I was never - and still am not - a Reggie hater, but I've always kind of wished that someone would go back in time and post to tell us "Guys, if the Great American Scream Machine gives you whiplash, you may want to change teams now while you have the chance."

Shaw, Nesbitt, etc... I'm comfortable with whoever our head coach puts out there.

Been a looooooooooooong time since I've said that.

My 2 cents on this.

Coach Johnson is unique in that if someone runs his option offense smoother - he'll start over someone who has a better arm and who is a better athlete. He has done that a few times at Navy. If Jaybo is making the reads and is smoother he'll be the starter.

I'd be shocked if Josh isn't starting against Jax State, but its not outside the realm of possibility that Nesbitt is bungling things and not performing and Jaybo comes in and takes the job during the early part of the year.

Still don't know why everyone goes on about this. The coaches have essentially said Josh is the guy, those who attend practice say Josh is the guy and he's clearly the leader of the team. Everything I've read is that Josh has picked up the offense and is doing a good job with his reads and running the plays. He's bigger, faster and has a better arm than Jaybo as well. Why the fascination with a freshman? I'm sure he's a guy who can and will play this year. But I have not read anything to make me think Josh isn't our best option.
