I'm not worried. DL is our deepest position. I'm concerned about the progression of our OL though.
DL is actually our most thin position...not our deepest. LB is our deepest far and away.
We only have 4 scholarship DT's next year and two will be freshmen (Barnes and Lanier), one sophomore (Walls), and one junior (Anderson). None have started and 3 of the 4 are underclassman. Additionally, QB and either side of the line are the most difficult position to play as freshmen.
If Walls can rebound from the broken leg that would be nice.
Barnes has shown dominance in practice at times...it just remains to be seen how he progresses in pass rush and how many snaps he can play(conditioning). That is the reason many liked him at OT. All reports are that he will be a great DT for us.
Lanier will be a true freshman...and he has lost 30-40 lbs. to try and get ready. He is not a fast first step guy like we are used to with Richard and Walker...but he is strong upper body, hips, etc. His film reminds me a lot of Willie Burkes...if anyone remembers him.
Anderson is the lone upperclassman...and has seen some good playing time this year.
Ideally you would have four returning DT's next year that have had playing time...and the 3-deep would have freshmen that are being redshirted. That is just not going to be the luxury for us. Whoever signs with us as a DT in the class of 2009 will have to be ready to get some snaps right away.
We are witnessing the best D-line in GT history this year...there would be fall off no matter what the scenario.
