My wife and I got married when we were twenty in 1970. She has been in constant pain for many years. It breaks my heart to see the toll this has taken on her. She used to be a marathon runner. Now, she can't even walk around the block. But, she is such a fighter. She refuses to complain and gets mad, when I comment on it. I found out a few years ago that I have Parkinson's Disease, but IT IS NOTHING compared to what my wife goes through every single day and night.

When I saw the young man at Purdue last Saturday night and when I read this, I feel so stupid and ashamed for ever feeling sorry for myself. I lost my Daddy and my Father-In-Law to cancer. My heart and prayers go out to these courageous people. The terrible suffering of such brave and faithful people, and their families, really puts sports in perspective.

22 is a weird time to be diagnosed, but it happens.

Leukemia is very heterological. It has a thousand different faces over a dozen different diseases. So one person's journey has nothing to do with another person's.

There's been an amazing amount of research in the last 11 years. Lots of changes in protocols and capabilities. Really dramatic.

Bear in mind that if he is undergoing chemo or something he may be functional as a non-athlete but be away for a year as an athlete. There are also oral biologics that can control many of the leukemic forms and still allow him to train. Chemo can be administered in Hawaii of course, but I'd be camped at MD Anderson or another center of excellence for his particular flavor of leukemia. And it may just be venetoclax or gleevec or something.

I've seen what she has gone through radiation treatment, stem cell transplant and is now on her third chemotherapy one the side effects were bad the 2nd one stopped working. It has migrated from her blood stream to her lymph nodes, but the 3rd chemo seems to be working she has been on it for a month. We've lived through the nausea, other digestive tract problems and 9 trips to the ER and hospital stays this year alone. She has lost 60 lbs and seems to have aged 15 years. The sad part is she was in remission for 1 year and then it returned last Christmas. I'm 63 years old and I have never seen someone as brave as my wife and her refusal to allow this to defeat her.
