We are getting a little fixated with stats here. His defense was our identity when we had Tenuta. Our defensive performances definitely passed the eye test, but we consistently struggled to score points offensively which is why the overall results were never what we wanted. We also seemed to favor 50/50 players going to the defensive side of the ball first. As good as his defense was during ACC play, the Dawgs always seemed to be able to block our pass rush and consistently found receivers down field against Tenuta coached defenses.
Now under CPJ (currently Roof at DC) defense is not our identity. The defense looks worse (eye test), but the overall style of play is different. UGA does not seem to make as many big passing plays downfield on us, but has had more success running the ball (opinion not supported by data). 50/50 players are going offense first in my opinion (OL, A back, etc.).
I think this is an apples to oranges comparison for the reasons I listed above. One key is that Tenuta NEVER beat UGA, meanwhile CPJ and the defense we have rolled out there under him have beaten them 3 times (Roof twice). Also, I do not believe Tenuta would be as successful at Tech now for several reasons versus what we were able to do on defense in the mid-2000s.
