Joshua Nesbitt and Andrew Gardner in the GT HoF

You either go out a hero, or stick around long enough to see yourself become a Hewitt...

Only if you have a lifetime contract. I think Hewitt would be remembered much more fondly if we didn't have to wait so long to fire him or skimp on the next coach.

Not that it's his fault -- as someone else said, who would turn it down? But it is what happened.

If only he had left for St. Johns.

Very few Tech fans think of him as a Tech icon who should be honored among our athletic legends like they do, say, Nesbitt or GoL.

Pretty much every HOF is a Hall of significant accomplishments

How long do you think it will be before CPJ gets voted into the HOF?
Sting has to wear down. The dollar support todd threw at clown vs what he pretended to try to do for cpj; but was a total fake; burnt paul. Todd made paul think he was trying but really ego todd wanted his guy. And got him. And burnt down with him because todd forgot one thing. Todd is not smart. Not a high iq person.
Meanwhile paul was essentially frustrated out of coaching to be honest. Wants nothing to do with here. Now that the firings happened and paul has been laughing this whole time going good god todd is a fool, it heals. He will be back as one of the best.

and ironically monken may be too

Well deserved, Nesbitt was one of my favorite players to watch in any sport.

There's also a big lol in the HoF list that will get some people riled up...
Nesbitt is easily one of the greatest Tech players ever.
1. He could have easily transferred when CPJ was hired but he stuck around.
2. He had the patience to learn the option when many others might have given up.
3. I think people forget the number of times he won us a fresh set of downs, a TD or extra yards entirely on his own effort. With Nesbitt 4th and 1 was guaranteed.
4. Nesbitt played through some ridiculously hard hits.
5. If you want to see how much of a difference Nesbitt made to Tech’s offense, look no further than the VPI game where he was taking us down the field to take us 3 (?) TDs up until he fractured a bone. And we lost that game despite VPI looking completely overmatched while Nesbitt was playing.
6. After a certain point injuring Nesbitt became plan A for many of the teams we played. Especially the scumbags from Athens. Nesbitt wasn’t bothered and was rarely injured.
7. The play in the FSU lightning game with him basically stealing back the fumble out from the arms of the FSU defender would put him in the HoF all by itself.

Both football players well deserved. I agree that it's hard to see CPH as a GT hall of famer, although hard to argue against the coach who provided GT's 1 and only MBB championship game appearance. And in fairness, which of us would have rejected the offer of a lifetime contract? It's not his fault our AD was stupid. Maybe it is his fault he fell off as a coach but that is generally what happens to coaches, time passes them by.
Paul Hewitt got a lot of blame for what was a dumb decision by the AD. The reality is that Paul Hewitt likely doesn’t even make that decision. That decision is largely made by his agent. Your agent gets you the best imaginable deal you don’t f him over (he earns a percentage of your earnings) by turning it down.

What’s even more tragic is that the lifetime deal almost certainly played a huge role in CPH slipping into mediocrity
That is true, but that's partly because his poor performance coupled with the huge buyout crippled our program and we still haven't recovered.

There's an argument for him to be in our HoF but I don't think the matter is as simple as looking at the number of tourney appearances under him and after.

JfN, on the other hand, is the epitome of a GT HoFer. Will never forget being in the stands when he took the ball back from FSU. What a play, and what a player.
His 2nd last season had more wins than we’ve seen in any season since. His last 2 seasons had more combined wins than any 2 combined seasons by any single HC since then.

His contract wasn’t his fault. It was entirely GT’s fault. In fact, if nothing else, it would be highly unethical for him to stiff his agent by refusing the contract he negotiated for him (the fact that so many people think Hewitt had any role in the contract other than signing whatever his agent presented to him is kind of funny).

Paul Hewitt had to go when he did. But under him there was still enough excitement and hope in the basketball program that a competent AD was able to get a specific donation to redo the entire arena in the worst period of his coaching tenure.

Performance didn’t cripple the program. We were in the tourney the year before he left and regularly recruiting and churning out NBA players.

His buyout hurt for sure, but that was an administrative mistake — and shouldn’t hurt his resume as a coach. Hiring Gregory and Pastner were administrative mistakes as well, and have deteriorated our BBall brand which was a destination for top talent under cremins and hewitt.

100% agree of Nesbitt.

I’m interested as to if Justin Thomas gets in. While he seems like a lock, I read in the past that he doesn’t meet the criteria. If true, I hope we make an exception.
I largely agree with this comment except for hiring Gregory being an administrative mistake. Hiring Gregory was a brilliant move intended to blunt the impact of the Hewitt contract.

Gregory was a very cheap hire. One who agreed to a very short contract without much of a buyout at all. And he did all this knowing that in his first year we wouldn’t even be playing in our home arena. And if there was one thing that we knew about Gregory was that he wouldn’t embarrass Tech (look at all the baggage we had to deal with Pastner in the beginning, or even Stanbury and his miserable finances, for that matter).

The whole idea behind hiring Gregory was to get a dirt cheap coach on a short contract with a tiny buyout who could navigate the lack of an arena for a season and give us a few years to see off the bulk of Hewitt’s contract allowing us to hire someone really good with far more money in the bank after his tenure, without him hurting Tech’s reputation in the meanwhile.

The problem was Radakovich was poached by Clemson midway through Gregory’s tenure and was replaced by someone who made the extremely dumb decision to extend Gregory with a raise and a larger buyout and pretty much defeat the entire purpose of hiring him in the first place.

And THEN that really dumb person hired a coach with baggage that Memphis wanted to get way from and, when handed a blessing of NCAA violations that would allow us to terminate for cause, didn't take the opportunity presented and instead chose to terminate the women's basketball coach for cause to avoid the absolutely miniscule buyout on that contract.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
