Robert Davis has been a head coach for 36 years and is the state's second winningest coach of all time. But what he sees everyday while leading Westside-Macon is something he has not seen in along time. He sees linebacker Julian Burnett.
"He is as good I've had since Ronald Simmons," said Davis, who coached Simmons at Warner Robins in the middle 1970s. Simmons was an All-American at FSU and is in the Florida State Hall of Fame. "[Burnett] is strong; he is fast, and he loves contact. I don't know another way to describe a linebacker."
Burnett is approaching 500 tackles for his career and has three defensive touchdowns this season. He is also academically qualified with a 3.4 grade-point average and a 930 SAT.
"He would love to play for one of the state schools," Davis said. "Georgia is dickering with him right now. Ole Miss has offered, Vanderbilt wants him bad, N.C. State wants him. I just know one thing - somebody is going to get a real football player."
Personally, and do not know if he is going to be redshirted or not, but if he is not -- I like Burnett. I truly believe at the end of his GT career, he will be one of the good LB's we have had.
First point....last name does not end in 'e'
He had something like 300 tackles his junior and senior years combined.
5-10, 230
Runs anywhere from 4.51 to 4.66 depending on the camp...I would put him at 4.6 consistently
Incredible nose for the ball...heady LB
Vertical of 37"
SS of 4.48
Bench 400, Squat 515
Product of Westside High in Macon, GA.
Also had offers from NCState, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Purdue
This is a big time commitment. 5'10" 225 lbs, 4.6 speed, benches 450, squats 550 and has over 300 tackles in the last 2 seasons.
This dude is agile, hostile and mobile. A RTMMF just what we need on D.
Go Jackets!
Rather than starting a new thread, will post this here. Yesterday afternoon, the local radio show (Bill Shanks Show) was at a Wild Wings Cafe and had a bunch of the local signees and their coaches there -- along with callins of state football coaches. JB was there with his head coach and defensive coach.
JB's interview made me proud that he is coming to Tech. Am paraphrasing, but he said in talking about his reasons for coming to Tech was to get a degree that meant for something; in talking about playing next year -- his answer was that he was going to try and get on the field, but if the coaches wanted to RS him, he was okay with it. Head coach and his defensive coach raved about him -- talking about he made them great coaches -- and now they will go back to being just average. Heady, hard work, etc.
Bill Shanks (UGag fanatic) also ranted on his only 2 stars -- compared him to Rennie Curran in very similar styles.
Everyone kept calling him a football player, in that he is not flashy, not mouthy -- but will just play hard nosed football.
Was excited about Burnett already -- but the show made me more proud of our school and the recruits we get.
The picture in my avatar is Julian Burnett. You would not want to meet him in a dark alley. He is one bad mama jama!
Go Jackets!
Sed Griffin is our best linebacker and he's only 5-4".

Now way man. I am about 5'10" with shoes on. Sed and I where about eye to eye last summer.
Short never bothered me much in a linebacker. Lower center of gravity, tends to wrap up the ball carrier closer to the ground, easier to knock the pins out from under would-be crossing route receivers, etc.
Yes the picture in my avatar on the other site is also Julian Burnett. That one gives a bit better view of his no nonsense approach to life in general.
Go Jackets!
Nick Buoniconti made a nice NFL career out of being a short LB. However, short does have it's limiting factors.
You best not make him mad.
