Julian Burnett

Maybe we can give him the ironic nickname "Smiley" given his glower and general linebacker badassness.

Wasn't their some famous guy named Smiley Burnett or something close to it?

The descriptions of this guy remind me a little of Ron Rogers. Linebacker from Dublin, I believe, played alongside Brookings. Not too tall, not too fast, but a huge nose for the ball. All he did was make tackles. And when he got to a ballcarrier, that's as far as the ballcarrier ever went.

Is he going to get playing time this year? I know we are pretty thin at LB so I am assuming so.

Anyways, I don't really question the height if he has they right attitude, I.E. a mean steak, he'll be damn good.

You can have a 6'1" linebacker who's attitude sucks and you'll have a bad player.

Don't take this the wrong way fellow Jackets, but Michael Johnson did not play every down last year, for that matter even whole games last year. UVA comes to mind, UNC comes to mind. We had a piss poor defensive line in both of those games because they simply did not come to play. Flat out. I think that goes back to coaching a little bit, but I digress. I'd rather have a defense full of undersized, mean, and players who come to play on Saturdays than a defense full of NFL drafts that take a game off......

That's just my way of justifying that as long as Julian Burnett plays with a fire under his shorts, size won't matter. It ain't the size of the Jacket, it's the sting that hurts.

We are going to find that out about Marcus Wright too this year.

What scares me far worse than the menacing look on his face is the fact that he's wearing red. Hopefully this is a high school jacket or something similar.

Aside from that, can't wait to see him on the field this year - in old gold and white!

Go Jackets!
I heard he only puts ketchup on hotdogs because he loves the color red so much.

I don't think were thin at LB.

We have Brad Jefferson, Sedric Griffin, Kyle Jackson, Steven Sylvester, Malcolm Munroe and B.J. Machen fighting for two spots.

No worries... Thats his high school's colors.

Wiskey,
Glad you finally called out last year's DL for what they did. They (especially MJ) did not show up in some games last year. I know UVA has a good line but they got manhandled in that game.

Yeah, I think JB thinks he will probably redshirt as well, based on what he said at signing day. However, if he does not RS, he will be my freshman to watch this year.

Lester Alvin "Smiley" Burnette was Gene Autry's sidekick. Maybe we can get a better nickname for Julian.

This is a purely uninformed idea, but gut instinct tells me "Bullet" will prove a good nickname for him.

CPJ has said he won't burn RS just for special teams. We're deep at LB so I doubt he'll play this year. He would have to come in and pickup the defense really quickly. Our guys said they were playing slow last year because they have to think about what they were doing. That was Sophs and Juniors, think about what it's like for a True Frosh. I think he'll be a very good player for us but probably not til 2011.

Well, y'all need to start working on it then. Bad things happen when the board falls asleep. He might just be Smiley someday.

When was that said? This is the best way to get your best athletes game experience and get accustomed to speed of the college game. Expect at least 4-5 of the freshman to fill that void that is on special teams.

It's also a good way to waste a year of eligibility, when you have others who can play those ST positions. A fifth year senior beats a true freshman 9 out of 10 times. Playing a true FR trades that year for his fifth year.

He can also get up to speed through practice, he just can't get game experience. However, very few R-FR start anyway, so he can get the game experience in his R-FR year.

+1. The only reason to not redshirt is if the kid is going to play meaningful minutes on offense or defense. Like Jaybo, Coop, and Reid did last year.

I feel like Steven Sylvester's redshirt was wasted last year. I understand why the coaches did it. They did not know that Kyle Jackson and Sed Griffin would step up and play solid football. However, Steven played primarily special teams and will probably be in the same position this year unless there are a lot of injuries. I think I would rather have him as a RS senior in 2012 than have him play sparingly as a true freshman in 2008.

I agree with you 100%, but that is the nature of the beast. I feel like Griffin wasted a year. He should have been RS after he broke his leg. But playing special teams that first year does a lot for you, especially if you can be an asset on the teams. And the coaches mindset are if you have the ability and can contribute you will play early

You know, Wheeler was given a RS his second year. Perhaps we can give SS his this year, if we don't need him on the depth chart.

idaman54, he said it last year before the season IIRC. I'll try to track it down. He made a comment about how alot of burning RS for special teams has gone on in the past here and he doesn't like to do it. I don't really understand your point. If you're saying you'd like to have a player play ST 1 season before playing O or D, Redshirting just delays that by 1 season. We have plenty of people this year who are 2nd stringers who can contribute on ST, we shouldn't need True Freshmen. Last year, playing so many Freshmen and RS Freshmen, is not ideal. The only reason to not RS someone is lack of depth at a position or if the player might leave early (hard to predict).
