King, Wells and Hansen gone

I was a kicker. Both guys had some serious mechanics issues. It was obvious to me why King struggled. He used a big swinging arcing leg motion. That works fine if you time it just right. Not so much under pressure. This is why he put kickoffs out of bounds left.

Likewise, Wells had issues too. In 2018, he was on fire and I laughed and loved every kick. I do wonder if he got coached and ruined his unique style. He was short and very vertical on the ball. Easy to shank and lacks power, but I enjoyed every kick he made in 2018.

I agree about giving Wells more in-game chances. Can't agree with the rest of your post, tho.
 
I don't agree with giving Wells more in-game kicks. After he missed the XP and was replaced by King, I heard the couple behind me talking about Wesley and asked them about him...turns out they know the family. So from then on, I began to watch him in pre-game and half-time warm-ups . He was awful...God awful. By all accounts, he's a smart kid and a fine young man. And he had a very good 2018 season for us, thankfully. But even the guy who sat behind me finally commented to his wife one (in my hearing), "I don't know what happened to his confidence but he cannot hit the broad side of the barn now."

As an example, I watched him during the NC State pre-game and half-time. He attempted 8 kicks pre-game....he made one. Of those kicks, 4 were from the 30 yard mark. So I'm thinking "Maybe it's just the angle and he'll do better as he moves back. He moved back to 40 yards and missed both. Moved back to 45 and missed wide left once and wide right and short by several yards the next time. At that point, he picked up his stuff and walked back to the sideline. During the half-time, he attempted 3 kicks..30, 40 and 45 yards. Missed them all. He then tried 2 kick-offs and neither made it to the end zone.

So I don't give a frog's rear-end what he did in 2018 because in 2019 he was not the same kicker. I wasn't at practice so I cannot evaluate what the coaches had seen or had not seen. But I witnessed with my own 2 eyes how very bad he was in 2019. And if you can't do it in practice and warm-ups, what in the world makes you think he's going to do better when it matters in a game and there are thousands of people actually watching what you're doing?

Yeah, we've had this discussion before, so no reason to re-hash it now that he's gone. But the reason you give him a chance is because the other guy is missing everything. And some guys are just gamers. No idea if Wells would've been able to turn it on or not. But we sucked at kicking and had a once perfect kicker on the sideline watching it happen.
