As a SPSU alum, I received the very last degree from SPSU in August of 2015 graduating cum laude with a degree in civil engineering. I co-oped through school and got a job that I still have today 3 months before I even graduated. I got into Tech as a transient student and could have gone there after my freshman year. My whole life I always wanted to go to Tech. My dad who graduated from Tech in 1977 encouraged me that SPSU was probably a better place to be and I think we was right.
SPSU was putting out hands on engineers from Georgia to stay and work in Georgia. That was their goal. Tech has shifted its focus into being an international research institution. Focusing on students outside of Georgia and pushing them out into the world. During this time the BOR was on a financial merger sweep across the state. I was there when all of this happened. Uga had started its own engineering program with the same focus as SPSUs to take students from Georgia to work as engineers in Georgia. The SPSU KSU merger was done by the Uga and GT led BOR to bluster Uga's engineering program. I had professors leave for Uga. SPSU was the fastest growing university in the state with the 4th highest SAT scores in the state behind GT, Uga, adn Georgia College. Southern Poly was thriving.
I was there for the open forums with SPSU President Rossbacher (who was great) and KSU President Papp. I was there through all of this. The merger was done very poorly and the ones who suffered were the students and lower level employees. I had friends who were had scholarships to play on the SPSU soccer team have there scholarships removed because they were freshman or sophomores. (they only let the junior and senior athletes keep their scholarships) BTW SPSU sports teams were very good for in NAIA with hopes to move up to DII. While the merger made since in some areas it due to the proximity, it made not since in terms of the type of students who attended the two schools.
Southern Tech was also started due to the need for more technical hands on engineers in the state of Georgia. Southern Tech was started with "Engineering Technology" degrees which is different more hands on degree than a traditional theory based "Engineering" degree. Over time SPSU incorporated traditional engineering degrees to meet the need for more PEs in the state since you only need 4 years of experience after graduation with an engineering degree instated of 7 with an engineering technology degree to get your PE.
I had lots of friends who went to SPSU and my wife went there. I was not happy about the merger at all due to the nature of how different the two schools were. The merger definitely helped KSU start their football program with the extra enrollment money. Southern Poly was ran 100 time better than KSU. I am proud to be a SPSU alumnus and I have no regrets not transferring to Tech. But I've been a Tech fan my whole life and it shouldn't matter were you went to school to be a fan. Some of y'all are bickering about what actually happened but the truth is that is over now and it doesn't matter how or why it happened but who did it hurt the most. I now have degree from a school that no longer exist but SPSU still has a great reputation in the professional world at putting our great engineers with real world knowledge who are ready to work day 1. My worry is that 30 years down the road that reputation will be forgotten.
