Looking At History Of GT/UGA Series

I would have to add 1983 to the list. If John Dewberry throws the ball two yards further down our sideline toward the end of the game we beat the mutts that year as well. Not his fault, but he needed just a bit more juice on the throw.
Mover, although it wasn't down to one play, another day that almost made history was Charles Dudish, who took Tech to the edge of an upset with Southern Cal. I couldn't attend the game but was listening to Al Ciraldo, who got more excited in the 2nd half when we were still close.

I was there -exciting game, and one Tech could have won. I haven’t been able to find video of the ‘83 game, only Munson’s call of it. I made notes skipping through his call.

Tech led 7-0 and 14-7
Game was tied 7-7, 14-14, and 17-17.
Dawgs running game took over in the 2nd half, a 91 yd TD drive and FG put them up 27-17 late in the 3rd.
Tech came back to cut it to 27-24, forced a punt on Dawgs next possession a 53 yard punt gave Tech the ball back with a little over 2 minutes to go.
On 4th and 14 Dewberry connected on a 30 yarder to put the ball at midfield. Another 1st down put the ball at the 36 with 1:30 to go in the game.
As MoF2 alluded to, Dewberry under-threw an open receiver around the 10 and an INT ended the game.
Tech won the yardage battle, but came up just short, setting the stage for my favorite GT/UGA game of all time -sitting in club level at Sanford Stadium to watch Tech go up 35-6 on their way to a 35-18 win.

I had a band instructor in HS who tutored guys on the UGA bb and fb teams tell me they were borderline neanderthals (circa 2006). Around 2009, I read an article talking about the discrepancies between average student incoming sat scores and those for football teams. Almost the entire sec was at the bottom of the list right at the minimums - I think UF had the largest discrepancy (I grew up a gator so that hurt). GT was the only football team in the country whose players averaged over 1000/1600.

I was was there that day. When John threw the ball I had my arms up signaling touchdown.

1971 - Phantom 4th ("extra") timeout for Andy Johnson, then Jimmy Poulos' "almost TD" dive that got called UGag's way by the SEC refs. Also, Brad Bourne recovered a UGag fumble & the SEC refs ruled he couldn't advance a fumble...... the precursor to numerous calls UGag's way in more recent times with waaaaaay too late whistles.

That was the Dude's best game in his short career. We were up 18-15 with 5 minutes left in the game. QB Jimmy Jones had been harassed all day by Perdoni & Co...... I think even DT Wayne Laircey had an INT.... but Jones finally got enough time to heave one about 55 yards to Sam Dickerson to make the score 18-22. On the ensuing KO, a trick play was botched & fumbled, leading to future Raider RB Clarence Davis making a short run IIRC on the next play to make it 18-29. Game over.

Two weeks later Charlie disappeared into the French Quarter after the Tulane loss, missed the bus back to the airport, and on Monday morning got the dreaded "Come see me" note from Bud Carson on the Player Bulletin Board outside the Dressing Room. We faced the Domers & Dwags without him. Haven't seen him since.

ADDED: Easy bar bet win......Two USC QBs who did not play against GT were future NFL HFCs Mike Holmgren & Jim Fassel.

You guys still own the longest streak. Eight straight in the fifties. Twice in this generation UGA has won 7, and right on the verge of #8, the Jackets have pulled it out and Sisyphus is at the bottom of the mountain again.

First time was 1998, a decent Georgia team but Joe Hamilton led a late drive in Athens and GT hit the game-winning field goal, then won the next two as well—after which UGA won another 7, bringing us to 2008. DEFINITELY Georgia was going to win in 2008. Book it. Mark it down. Preseason #1 rank, AND Tech had a new coach who was trying to force Chan Gailey's roster into a new offense. We chuckled. No WAY Georgia loses in 2008.

Every time that happens, it begins the cycle again. At LEAST eight years before we get another shot at it. I'm getting old . . . So ya see, there are still some nice things you can have.
Theron Sapp aka. the "Drought Breaker" is one of three bulldogs honored with the retirement of their jersey numbers. It must have been a really big deal to UGA alumni and fans of that generation to retire his jersey because otherwise he was an ordinary "plugging fullback" as Dodd said but on that day Dodd asserted in his biography Theron was great. Sinkwich and Hershel were self explanatory being Heisman winners and among the very best of their day.

On the game winning drive IIRC in the 3rd quarter, it started about midfield after Sapp recovered a GT fumble. Sapp carried the ball something like 9 out of 10 or 11 plays & scored on a 4th & 1.

We talked about Sapp quite a bit back in August: Link

I remember it. I was watching on TV. What pissed me off and broke my heart was it was in our stadium!
Hardly mentioned is the complete a$$ Whipping put on them in 1962. I always believed the 1962 team was about 2 terrible plays from being undefeated, and also broke the Bama winning streak. Lothridge, Martin, Guthrie, Stallings, Watson, Auer, etc….lot of talent

What did that long winded diatribe have to do with us winning games in this Series vs this opponent?

It is a very weak look to lose Games (in the past), and then talk Academics

There's no barrier that prevents an person with great Academics from running a 4.3 forty, or being 6-7 315lbs and running a 4.9 forty.

Similarly, a person that is Academically challenged doesn't guarantee that that person will be any faster or better at any sport.

If weak Academics (based soley on Test Scores, a poor indicator IMO)were the panacea that you make it out to be , Where is Mississippi State's CFP appearances, South Carolina's, Iowa State, West Virginia, Louisville, why aren't all those Teams nipping at Bama's heels?

Generally speaking, I try to avoid talking "academics" on a FB Msg Board, it doesn't usually go very well.

Did anyone else find this ironic?
Yes, I do find it ironic, but my words are used judiciously to accurately and completely tell both sides of the story for the sake of Integrity and Fairness.

Honesty and fairness is never associated with being long winded, what he said given the bias in his comments was long winded.

He basically put out 2nd hand info, from a cousin of a neighbor of a co-worker that overheard something from a Guy's Wife.

It's tiring to keep hearing the Academics stuff thrown up when our Team might play the least smart in Game situations among all P5 Teams (not just under CGC, this also occurred under other GT coaches)

It's also tiring to keep hearing the Academics stuff thrown up when our close rate on Blue Chip Academic Qualifiers for GT is horrible when you look at the NFL Players from places like Stanford, ND, BC, Michigan, Duke, UVA, etc. (Blue Chip is 4* & higher rated Guys)

There's always an opinionated method to my madness, but it always grounded in telling both sides of the Story
