Looks like Monken is not going to be our next Coach

A guy like Ken could be successful here. It's not like we can point to past failings as a college coach. He took an NFL team to the Superbowl, and all he's doing right now is helping Philip Rivers have one of his best seasons.

The thing that gets me the most excited about Whisenhunt is that superbowl rings are generally pretty good for recruiting.

After that, I got very little.
Yeah, same thing.

I'm a pessimistic asshole as you well know however i also posess a bizzare ability to find silver linings and imagine positive possibilities.

So here goes:

Whisenhunt is part of a huge plan TStan has to emulate Clemson's success. Whisenhunt will work for a reasonable salary and we will focus our resources on the best assistant coaches, support staff, and recruiting baubles that $125 million can buy.

Whisenhunt is the most GT thing we could do.

It's what I would expect from a Dave Braine or Mbob hire. He's a warmed up version of Gailey. If you removed GT from Whisenhunt's resume, people would be furious that that is the best that we can do (or at least TStan). Sure, he has the experience of being at GT, but with no college experience to speak of, no recruiting background, and a mediocre record as a head coach; this hire (if true) is incredibly underwhelming.

Now, if TStan hires Whisenhunt with a rock star staff and some real support from the school, maybe it won't turn into the trainwreck that it feels like.

He gets his dick kicked in as a coach when he doesn't have a HoF QB.

The flip side is we have past failings as an NFL coach to point to and he didn't have to convince Philip Rivers to come to San Diego for less money.

Isn't the $125 million for facility improvements?

Yeah, I'll be looking for silver linings but if this is all true I'll be incredibly pessimistic.

Whisenhunt's best years have come with decent old quarterbacks who found their groove again.

We've got ...uh... shit.

Thats a stretch. He did a very good job with several guys and without getting involved with that dumpster fire in Tennessee his numbers would be good by NFL standards.

He did better than Saban, eh?

Surely, but IIUC our interest payments are 12 million so assuming we put a big dent in that, the 125 effectively frees a lot of money up for salaries.

To be fair, there's been no middle ground in terms of the QBs he's had to work with. He's had Roethlisberger, Warner, and Rivers, and then he's had a bunch of guys who are either out of the league or career backups. There's not a coach in the world who was going to do anything with the QBs he had in 2010-2012 in Arizona or in 2014 with Tennessee. None of those guys had any business starting games.

My biggest concern with Whisenhunt is how flexible and innovative he's willing to be offensively. If he has a Friedgen approach, where he's willing to continuously adapt, he can be successful. If he's dead set on carrying over a straight pro style offense, it could be a disaster.

I'd prefer we opt for a career college coach.
