Low Attendance

my oldest been going to games in Upper North with me since she was about 3. We are two seasons away from potentially seeing her in the student section from our seats in Upper North. She's applying next Fall.
Wish you the best of luck. A reminder I’ll give you is that almost all competent students can go anywhere and transfer in. Many in my math department did the same. Degree says Tech on it.

I don’t 100% agree with this. I grew up a sidewalk fan (no idea how), and until I moved out of Georgia in 2005, I attended 2 games a year. Growing up in the 80’s-90’s in Gwinnett County there were more sidewalk GT fans I went to school with than you think mainly due to hoops under Bobby. Problem is, the school (GT) itself doesn’t market sports well at all to kids. Even in the 90’s-early 2000’s the other school does a better job marketing themselves to all types of fans. So fast forward to now, the product overall on the field and on the court have been bad for 7 years. You’re not going to build any kind of base’ with a poor product while programs around you west, north, and east are winning titles. And truthfully in a city / metro area the size of Atlanta, there is absolutely no excuse for under 40k a game.

Not that it’s the same in many ways, but South Carolina has been pretty much hot garbage for 90% of their history, and sell out pretty much every game.
Well we disagree. As for South Carolina, can you name any other “event” outside of Clemson and South Carolina football that folks attend in mass? There are things in Atlanta every week so to equate South Carolina is not being honest. When I attended the Ole Miss game I was invited in to a tent by some Ole Miss fans. They basically said the 6-7 weekends of Ole Miss football is their entire year of sports and they wished they had other options like the Braves, etc. They said this is why they love and show up even when they are mediocre. Nothing else to attend.

Absolutely true. But they also are outliers. These are young adults who want to be accepted. I have seen GT family after GT family in my local network in Albany, Thomasville, Valdosta who fall away from GT when their qualified kids don’t get in and end up at other schools. I talked to one kid who I coached youth sports who was a huge GT fan all because his family were dogs. What a kid. Of course, he got denied at GT and got in to UGA. He told me at graduation he was going to transfer to GT after his freshman year but not to tell his parents and that he had already talked to GT admissions about a transfer, etc. When I saw him at Christmas break he had joined a frat and found a cute little gal and thus ended a future GT family. When I asked him about GT he simply said he had to have a life and moved on. Meanwhile his spot at GT was probably given to a lifelong Michigan fan who will spend the next 50 years going to the big house instead of Bobby Dodd.

10-4 and thank you!

Most they do this transfer in from small nothing schools. I went to GGC (Georgia Gwinnett College) and the transfer acceptance rate was high. If you have an experience outside of that it makes sense not to.

I kept telling my cousin that it was the closest thing to a real Tech game of old that so had seen in awhile. Before the fourth quarter I was having a great time.

Yep. A middling crowd, but more into it than we’ve been in a while (aside from booing at last year’s Duke game). Felt like an entertaining, hard-fought game for 3 quarters. Too bad they play 4.

Come on. The population between the 2 cities and states is massively different.
Columbia, SC population is 137,000.
Atlanta is 490,000.
State of South Carolina population is 5.1 total.
Metro Atlanta alone is 6.1 million, state of Georgia 10.3 million.
I’m sorry but to use the “other things going on“ narrative goes both ways.

Sitting just above the student section .. i can attest they are not disinterested. Always seem to show up in good numbers and have fun. They are not part of the problem. Problem is we suck right now. We need to not suck.

Either way, I will be there next week.

I remind myself it's a tradition that makes memories. .. going to the games, taking my girls to tha games. Win or lose it's still GT.
Yep. I’m still bringing the family in from NC for the Syracuse game.

upper north as well .. it was a good crowd. agreed.

oh we are going to win next week. no doubt. we are bi-polar. it's to the point i hope we lose to Syracuse the week before UGA.
I’m betting the cars, the kids, and the trailer rent on the GT moneyline next week. I bet the moneyline last year at +900 and won. I bet the moneyline against UM two weeks ago at +820 and won.

Drinks are on me!

This is correct. It has taken years of erosion of a fanbase to get to this point. It is sad that people right down the street don’t give a crap about what happens at Bobby Dodd Stadium. This has been death by a thousand cuts

What you saw today is our fanbase. Everyone acting like we have thousands of fans just sitting at home is laughable. Fans do not equal alum. Yes, we have thousands upon thousands of alum sitting at home who are not fans. We discussed this before but when you become an international school you lose diehards. And GT has lost generational diehards and entire GT families due to admissions. We are seeing the result of the past 30 years. I’m fully expect that I will see the day where our administration will vote to remove the word “Georgia” from our name.
I noticed yesterday at the game that the Georgia state flag is no longer flown at BDS. It used to be flown under the US flag. I missed the.team running on the field yesterday. Have they returned to the tradition of having one platyer carry the US flag and one rhe Georgia state flag? Perhaps your theory is correct. If we see.the United Nations flag flying at Grant Field we’ll know you’re a prophet and you’re theory is proved.

It’s easy to bitch about the attendance sitting at home watching on tv. There were a lot more people than we, the people who go to games, anticipated. Win more games and people will come back. Last P5 win at home was Duke in October 8, 2022. Wtf is the point of bitching about attendance when we’re not winning games at BDS?

This. 6-6 with 6 home wins draws a bigger crowd than 6-6 with 1 cupcake win at home.

Six home wins requires scheduling at least six home games, though. Most “football” schools schedule seven. Meanwhile, we’re scheduling five and selling one to the Benz. Everybody knows the reason why, but celebrating the winningest field while peddling home games away is ööööing hilariously ironic.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a teaching moment. Worked out really well for my son. But maybe he was more serious about it.

It’s not the schedule, nor whether or not GT plays 1 game at MBS that’s the problem. Losing 1 game a year at BDS in front of 35-40k isn’t what you’re truly mad about. Let’s be honest here….You would not care one bit if GT was 5-2 right now.
