The Longhorns are currently ranked 7th in both polls and 10th in the BCS. They are averaging 34 points a game. Could this be because the OL line coach has the players he is responsible for motivated?

I was not a Mac fan during the main coach hunt.....UNTIL I saw and heard him at the end of the Seattle Bowl game . He was being interviewed on the field just as the game ended. He had perfect TV presence, and spoke to the Tech community like noone had in decades. It was one of those moments were I immediately realized that this was the man that Tech should hire. But was it too late?!? Did Coach Mac have a window?
.
As it turned out it was too late, Braine had already given the job to Gailey, even though that was not what he was saying in public.
.
That image of a confident, victorious Coach Mac on the sidelines, with a smile as wide as Texas will haunt me, as I am sure it haunts Braine.

What are the odds of us doing better if we had chosen one of the other head coaches chosen last year?

Would Paul Johnson be doing any better? How about the Vandy coach? What about Zooks? Evidence indicates only Willingham and the California coach are actually doing a better job. The other 10 are doing about the same or worse.

Everyone is trying to hire the next Stoops. For every Stoops hired there are 5 Bill Lewises and 50 Gerry DiNardos. The world will never know if Mac would have been the next Stoops but the odds are a lot better that he would have been the next Ray Goff.

not the man for the tech job, if he is such a hot commodity why has no one in all these years offered him a head job.

And Beeware...

Chan has maintained the momentum we had from last year.

We were outplayed by teams with lesser talent and outcoached (particularly at the half and at the end of games) by first year staffs. By the end even our motivation seemed to have vanished.

Our one solid win over a Stanford team with a lame duck coaching staff is not momentum.

GTCrew, you are exactly right and it seems like many of the posters on this board keep missing the point you just made:

Our football mediocrity began well before the Clemson game this year. We played unmotivated football most of last year under GOL/BOB.

Can't wait to spend this weekend on the Flats! Go Jackets!

We were unmotivated because the players knew something was up with the coaches. They were right, the staff was headed to ND. When college players play uninspired football, it usually indicates some problem at the coaching level that fans cannot see or know about. Makes you wonder what is up with this staff?

Wrecked

Your last sentence is what has me concerned....
The "gold glasses" crowd, for some reason is in denial over this obvious turn of events

Plus, one thing I have noticed repetitively over the years - when this kind of thing happens - there ALWAYS seems to be a lot more injuries...Just something I have noticed....

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Exactly the right question.

BeWare, the statement that all a 30 year coaches needs is an opportunity-Larry Coker at Miami is a good example. Miami looked at many prospects but when it looked as if recruiting would suffer if they dragged out the process, they turned to Coker. How many had heard of Coker before he was elevated to HC?. What I Thought.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">You pose a question that is open to arguments. By the same token why hasn't CG been able to keep a job. And don't say it is because coaches move around. The successful ones stay at one place for an extended period.

Coker is an example that worked out but there are many others that did not. A good example that was very similar to Mac's situation was Carl Torbush. UNC was coming off a very succesful run and Carl destroyed VT in the Gator Bowl. The players even chanted him name at midfield ala the MAC chant in Seattle. I think it is all a crapshoot.

Mac has never even been a coordinator at the college level. Why, with all his experience, is this the case? One must assume that he's not great with the X's and O's. So if he becomes a head coach, he will be entirely dependent upon his coordinators to do the scheming, just like Ray Goff was. We would rise and fall based on how well our coordinators performed and they would not receive any useful input from the head coach.

If I had a magic wand that would let me choose between the Seattle Bowl staff and the current staff, I would quickly take the Bowl staff. With all its blemishes and short-comings, the stability and recruiting advantages of that bowl staff would out-weigh the question marks of the current staff.

Ditto Toe Meets Leather and BellySeries. Mac has not even been offered a head coaching job in the 1AA division. Do not look for him to be offered one in the 1A division.

If Braine was so dumb as to refuse to hire Mac, then all of the ADs in both 1A and 1AA are just as dumb.

Added to the statement above, I will add another.

If Syracuse hires O'Leary and O'Brien goes with him, Syracuse will not do well. I am not to sure O'Leary would hire O'Brien at this time. With O'Leary overseeing his own defensive schemes, and unskilled O'Brien as coordinator, it would be a recipe for disaster.

Let's see how this prediction works out!

i think it is funny how everyone makes fun of Ray Goff. He sure did beat the hell of us every year.

hey

just wanted to point out that beeware had an orgasm when he saw this post.

man he's funny

Mac for coach?

Preamble: I'm sure Mac is a fine person, a good college assistant and a good "captain" who has a good rapport with the players.

However, A former UGA player can never be the head coach at Ga Tech. Period. It would adulterate everything Ga Tech stands for, the shining light in the middle of the cold dark rainy night. Better to bring back Bill Lewis and lose 8 games a year till the end of time than to surrender and be coached by a Dawg!!!

Some things are more important that football...

Ahsoisee,

Why wasn't Mac offered a Div-1A HC job?

Perhaps they saw the same thing DB saw in Mac. Or, perhaps it's very difficult to tell the good ones from the not-so good ones; real difficult.

How old was RF when Merryland offered him a low-ball contract to HC?

Two comments:

1. wgjacket makes an interesting point about all the bad mouthing of Goff. He did beat us.

2. A lot of you seem to have the opinion that Mac would not make it as a HC because he has not been a D1 HC before. Did any of you bother to see the last D1 HC job CG had? Hint: He hasn’t ever been a D1 head coach.
