Mac Mcwhorter instead of CG

Didn't we learn our lesson 10 years ago not to judge the potential of a coach based off of one brilliantly coached game, i.e. BL & the '91 Peach Bowl?

AugustaJacket, I agree with your philosophy of hiring within when there are qualified candidates available. I have no doubt, Friegden would have gotten the job had he still been at Tech. However, after Friegden the quality and coaching background dropped off sharply.

Maybe the new coach will do this if he stays around long enough.

I am passive at this point regarding Gailey. Because he is ultimately responsible for the program, I am dissatisfied he has not made any major changes due to the degrading trend of the football team.

Of course, I and most others have our own ideas and ways of doing things. His methods may turn out to be the best overall, so all I can do is play the waiting game and see what happens the rest of the year. However, if the team results do not turn around drastically, it appears he will have boxed himself into a corner by his inactivity in making needed changes.

I don't remember the details, but I'm sure someone can answer this question.

Did GOL have plans to take Mac with him to ND? I seem to remember it a specific way, but I don't want to post it here if it isn't fact.

First of all let me state I have no prejudice with UGA – I don’t care who they lose to.

I keep reading all the posts that state that Gaily’s resume was superior to other candidates. We will all have differing opinions on this issue. Forget the resume and look into the heart of the man and his desire to put together a program in the Tech tradition. I don’t believe CG has this in his heart. GT is just a stepping stone to another NFL job.

As for Mac being an UGA alum, that should not even be a consideration. I don’t care where a person graduated from. I care about his ability and his integrity. As I stated above I have no use for dogs but I do believe in putting a person in a position based on his desire to succeed. Mac showed his desire for excellence in the Seattle Bowl. Mac had spent 6 years at GT including the position of Assistant Head Coach. He had tenure as AHC at other schools. He also was Director of Football Operations for GT and several other schools. I would bet these positions gave him a little insight into recruiting and how to run a team.

Should Mac have been hired? I don’t know. Should he have been given fair and unbiased consideration for the position? Yes. With Mac we may not have been any better off today, but I know we would not have been doing any worse. At least we would see a motivated team on the field.

Regardless, I will be on the Flats Saturday pulling for my beloved team regardless of who is coaching or quarterbacking. The players will hear my cheers!

Offically,

What's in a man's heart? Only his heart surgeon knows for sure. The rest of us just have to guess.

ahsoisee, I think I should clarify a little. I don't believe any program should blindly hire from within. But, I think it is ideal when you can.

I merely wanted to state that if I am AD, the type program I would STRIVE for is one that could realistically promote from within at any given time. I would not have a coordinator or higher level assistant on the staff that I could not see as a possible future replacement, ala Mac since he is a UGA alum.

It may be Pie In The Sky and totally unrealistic that anyone could keep that type of program and quality coaching going. But, that is what I think you strive for. It's probably what any program would strive for.

Given our recent success under O'Leary, Fridge, etc., it is a shame that we were not in a position to hire from within. Too bad, in hindsight, the timing with O'Leary was not a year earlier.

Anyway, to summarize, I was merely stating my philosophy on hiring coaches. It was not really specific to Tech's situation. As you pointed out, it obviously cannot be the only criteria. But, IMO, we should work very hard to have our program in a position where hiring from within (is/can be) a heavily considered option.
