Mack Brown to UNC

Mack Brown was on the verge of championship hunting at UNC when he left. His defense's were Top Ten or close every year. UNC would be smart to play big boy football again instead of the flag football type they play. And this could kill us as I watched many a game where UNC simply ran it down our throats. Everybody used to by the way. Thank goodness that more cute throwing offenses came in vogue but take note at UGA, they are going to run it down our throats forever now. And Brown could do this at UNC again. They have everything they need to compete.

You guys remember that Mack Brown went 5-7, 8-5, 9-4, and then back to 8-5 in his last years at Texas right? It isn't like UNC has more to offer than Texas, which is why Mack Brown left UNC for....Texas. He is now significantly older, slower, and less energetic than his glory years. If he puts together an incredible staff and steps aside then maybe, otherwise he will just be a distraction like Bobby Bowden on the sideline at FSU during Fisher's first years.

I am just having a hard time getting nervous about Mack Brown at UNC.

We've got other issues more compelling. Wake beat Duke 59-7. Duke beat us.

Why do most other teams have deep pockets and we do not?

Fewer alumni in general. A specific type of alumni that's not inclined to donate a lot of money to sports. Smaller "sidewalk" fanbase. Smaller stadium that we can't fill up (92K at $100/ticket in Athens on Saturday ~$9,200,000, 37K at prices as low as $18/ticket in Atlanta the week before ~ $666,000). Big debt that we're paying on capital improvements. Bad coaching contracts that we're still paying off. The list goes on...

So, are you suggesting gross mismanagement of the GTAA over a protracted period? Because I am. No continuity at the Athletic Director position and no direction from the current director. Bobby Ross was the last adequate hire we have made in football (30 years ago) and that was just a quirk of fate and Len Bias's cocaine overdose. Stansbury needs to straighten this mess out now or get the hell out of dodge his own self.

I hope UNC gets a good coach. They always embarrass the ACC OOC

We need to be good enough that we don't have to worry about a UNC

I would be worried if they hired Mike Leach.

Texas is a mess of asshole boosters wanting to run the program

All of this and add in opponents that no one gives a damn about seeing and you get us. Seriously, who gets worked up for games against duke, unc, Wake, uva, etc.

Mack Brown has a history of being a great coach and recruiter, but much of that was 10-20 years ago. Here is the important question: How much of that is applicable now? Are recruits still enamored with Mack Brown now as they were in 2008 or 1998? Can Mack Brown still coach effectively as the game has changed? There have been a lot of coaches that come back to CFB and failed. Mike Price at UTEP comes to mind, also Dennis Erickson* at Arizona State, as well as a few others.

I get the feeling this hire doesn't really work out and most kids arent super excited to play for some old guy that did something in 2005. The angle that it is a long term move to set up the next hire kinda makes sense.

*A Dennis Erickson is rad. I randomly met him at a bar watching the 2014 ACC Championship and he was very complimentary of CPJ and Mike Leach.

So you’re suggesting that a solution to our instability at the AD position is to have the current AD (who actually has a vision forward - whether you agree or disagree is a matter of discussion elsewhere) to quit? Alright fam, alright. 7-5 ya later.

Braine didn't do us any favors with Hewitt's contract, which I believe we are STILL paying for. DRad might have erred in saddling us in debt for the stadium expansion that seems kind of pointless now (but that was the arms race at the time). MBob was an enigma.

O'Leary worked out pretty well for us. Gailey seemed OK on paper (and was adequate, if only just) - he just didn't have a good mindset for the college game. I'd still put Johnson in the "right man for Tech" on the strength of all the streaks he broke in 2008-2009, and a great 2014 season; the only real dissatisfaction I have with him is missing a bowl for the first time in forever (and then doing it again).

Stansbury seems to be trying a lot of the right things. It seems like we've got a big hole to dig ourselves out of just to get back to even before we can really start to try to build. But as I've said elsewhere today, if anybody thinks we're going to get to the level of the perennial playoff teams, they're going to be disappointed. It's not going to happen here. We might miracle our way in once in a generation, but we will never become Alabama or Clemson.

This guy gets it.

When you let the Big 12 pass you by at a program like Texas.

When Mack was in the ACC he was 3rd fiddle to FSU and UVA (and Clemson until the Tommy West years).

He had that one big year in 1997 and still couldn't beat FSU. So far out of our league... beat our ass by three points that year.

This just strikes me as more flailing about which is what UNC has always done best.
