Marshall will probably be the starter next season

"But CPJ picked Matthew Jordan to start, and he is still on campus, so if CPJ changed starters now that would be a sign that CPJ made a mistake. And CPJ will not allow that thought into the public arena." — texstinger shortly after 2016 season

Kudos, sir. Most excellent.

But you are without any doubt smart enough to know that precludes injury. I do not think CPJ , or med staff, would do that to a player that is hurt.

To one that is not, absolutely.

I hate for you to waste any of your life tracking my words, but maybe in 12 months we can pull this back up?

But really, I think everyone here just wants us to win ballgames, and most think 10 years is a lot more than fair enough time to see better than the losing records we have vs so many of our best opponents and what we have seen vs puke the last 4 years.

Regardless, Merry Christmas.

This is a situation not unlike Reggie Ball...it's damned hard for someone to replace a starter with a full year's game experience under his belt. They'll spend the off-season working on his throwing mechanics and teaching him how to make the correct reads - both passing and pitching reads. How much he improves will certainly be interesting to see. I did see improvement in his reads and pitches over the course of the season, but he remained inconsistent. A couple of pitches in the Ga game were damned scary.

Improvement in the o-line will make much difference as well.

If you cant make option reads now how are you going to make them in your last year? I think we'd get a lot more use out of him at AB and Lucas at QB. But that's not gonna happen so whatever.

Uga benched their starting qb and played a true freshman and now they're in the SEC championship. Skills can surpass experience.

Maybe we'll pick up the dual threat quarterback we've wished we had since Paul Johnson has been here this year.

I have to think that TaQuon Marshall either improves as a passer or gets benched. He was absolutely horrible the 2nd half of the season, and it made it MUCH harder for him to run the option since defenses had zero respect for our passing game. Lucas Johnson is athletic enough and seems to be by far the biggest passing threat we've had at that position, so I think he starts next year if Marshall doesn't get better. I've also heard a lot of good things about Tobias Oliver, so we've got plenty of options at the QB position, even if Jay Jones does move on after the season. Talent at that position is actually pretty far down my list of concerns for next year and the near future.

Merry Christmas to you as well. But you're being pretty snarky about CPJ. He's admitted he made mistakes plenty of times — like the multiple times when we've gone "back to basics" because his offensive wrinkles were creating more problems than they were solving. He's also changed starters when other players outperformed — such as when Marcus Marshall lost his starting position to Dedrick Mills before 2016.

You use the past four years to judge CPJ against Duke (7-3 overall, 1-3 past four years) but the past ten years to judge him against UGA (3-7 overall, 2-2 past four years). It is ridiculous to claim that the past four years is indicative of a 'trend'. We had a fun 2014, a horrible 2015, an above avg 2016, and a disappointing 2017. There ain't no trend.

Now perhaps the fact there's no trend is sufficient reason to be dissatisfied with CPJ. But let's get our criticisms right.

UGA's starter was injured, not benched and Fromm gained game valuable experience he wouldn't have otherwise. GT's presumed starter was injured as well, giving Taq the opportunity.

Yes, skills can overcome, but barring injury I think it's highly unlikely anyone beats out Taq. Now, there could be a Suggs type situation where the staff decides to go in a new direction, but I don't think that's going to happen.

With all of this Marshall hate going on and everyone bringing up his throwing inadequacies, can you please tell me under Johnson's regime when we had a good passer? If you want to get down to brass tacts we've never had an even ok passer. Sorry but Nesbitt and J. Thomas were pretty awful at chucking it. You guys have pretty short memories if you think Marshal is the worst. And btw there is zero chance he's not the starter next year.

I asked earlier and got no response. Who are we even looking at for QB?

5 posts in 9 years and this is what you got?

Do you really believe he has a strong arm? It seemed like he was having to heave the ball downfield and put lots of air under it; which led to lots of underthrown passes and open receivers having to stop and wait on the ball. I don't remember him overthrowing many open receivers downfield. I think he has a decent arm and accuracy for short range passes; but our offense doesn't do much of that. His arm strength is one my concerns because you can't coach arm strength.
His throwing motion has too much wind up in it which suggests to me his arm is not as strong as some would suggest. He seems to throw the bomb better than the short pass.

When Jacob Christ Eason was back he still rode the bench eventhough he still had more experience. My point isnt the likelihood of CPJ going with a new qb. It's the potential outcome with a new qb. And it's still possible Lucas can beat Taquan out for the job.

3-7 against UGA is acceptable in the modern era Tech-UGA series. 7-3 against Puke is also acceptable but I dont like how the series is trending. You bring up some solid points about fairly evaluation the ol' ball coach. Fair 'nuff.

The main issue here is his system is so ancient and undesirable that it's the first thing to get blamed whenever rough waters are encountered. I'm not a triple option, veer-offense guru thus I dont catch the subtleties of blocking changes, etc, so what I see is seemingly the same five plays over and over again. When these work, it's tolerable. When they hit for big plays it's exciting. But when it gets stopped over and over again, like it did this year, watching the same five plays go three and out is awful. It's worse than watching a different offense go three and out because of their variety (it at least *feels* like they're trying something different every time). The triple option can be like watching a game caught in an endless loop.

In summary, I like the triple option when it helps us win ball games but I absolutely hate it when we're mediocre with it because we could be mediocre with a conventional offense.

Understand, but without the injury to Eason, Fromm would still be #2.
Yeah, Luke may beat out Taq, but I think it's unlikely.
