Matt Rhule

I remember when we hired Bill Lewis.

Problem with BL is that he did it once at a lower level. Rhule was able to repeat his success at a P5 school, although Baylor was a unique case of having been really good then scandal which made them bad. So they already had a structure for being good.

Rhule does believe in many of the culture and off field stuff that Collins did.

He is a much better X/O coach and I think players respect him more. His issue seems to be QB; he doesn’t know that position like he needs to so his evaluation is lacking.

Rhule is at least a good coach. Collins is not.

This brings up the question of what causes a lot of close losses? Is it lack of character, lack of confidence or just a lot of bad luck.
I think eventually it becomes a thing and it’s difficult for the team to overcome the immense pressure of “winning a close game” while their opponents start playing looser knowing their opponent “always loses” these types of games. So a mixture of everything but eventually it becomes a cultural thing for a team and its opponents.

When Fridge went up to UMd he said the first thing he had to teach them was how ‘not to lose’. He worked on ’how to win’ after that.

It's possible, maybe even likely, that Sims is a special athlete who looks good in a controlled practice environment and in individual QB drills but totally sh*ts the bed in a real game situation. Guys like this tend to have coaches enamored with their potential to a fault, eventually leading to the dismissal of the coach. These QBs are called coach killers.

People like to think we weren't, but we were excited about that hire. Had been a DC at UGAg and just went 11-1 at East Carolina. It was actually perfect timing to win this state from the mutts.
He came up to the Army/Navy club in DC right before his first season at Tech. Spoke to him for a good bit - never saw it coming. Me, that is - guy seemed so legit. Did he ever coach again after Rice cut him loose - I was at that game (MD) when Rice fired his ass in the locker room.

In retrospect, one could tell that Collins was a ööööing idiot. Not so with BL - at least not with me - I had no idea what was about to go down.

Never a HC again. A DB coach in NFL and ND.

He was a good DC

The goofy weight training sideline bullshit is the type of gimmicky öööö that Rhule invented. They're like BFF. Geoff is Rhule without having the dice rolling for him twice.
This is all any program needs to know about Collins

“[Jalen Carter] said the strangest thing to me,” Yates said of the soon-to-be first-round pick, who was in his second year at Georgia at the time. “He looked at me and said, ‘Y’all are so unprepared…”

Puzzled by Carter’s statement, Yates asked what he meant, to which the Georgia standout defensive tackle said, “Y’all just don’t know what’s going on.”

Should have fired Collins at halftime of that game. Then kicked his ass in the locker room.

Maybe he was desperate to have a body for one year while he was putting together the program.

Nebraska is a moribund program. There’s
only a handful of coaches ever in the history of college football that would be capable of fixing that mess. A better question might be why would anyone in the right mind even try to fix Nebraska? Who the hell wants to go to Lincoln? Someone might temporarily fix their football program, but your basic location still sucks. They might be able to recruit a once in a lifetime combo of overlooked players, guys rehabbing, etc but having a sustainable good program is completely out of reach for them. It’s how Nebraska got Sims, they had to take the long shot chance. As with most 100-1 odds bets, they don’t pay off.

Additionally, not bringing his offensive coordinator, Steve Logan hurt. East Carolina was #14 in scoring per game in 1991.

Here’s a history lesson. 11-27 in 2 plus years with the Carolina Panthers. You say 2 plus years was not enough time, for some reason the Panthers saw something they didn’t like.
Are we talking about college or the NFL now? Whatever fits y'all's narrative. Many a great coach hasn't done well in the NFL. I'm not saying Rhule is a great coach but he took a mediocre Temple program and won, then took a gutted Baylor team and won. Four games into the season with Nebraska and he's 2-2, a failure.

Nebraska has done it well in the past so it’s not impossible to succeed there. The fans certainly support that program no matter how lousy the coach and team might happen to be.

I mean, they were a juggernaut in the 1990’s. Yeah, that’s 30 years ago now, but the program played well through both Solich and Pelini’s tenures for the most part, IIRC.

Rhule is a specific type of coach. If you're looking to get your program out of the gutter, Rhule might be more your speed. If you're looking to go to the next level, then probably not. I don't think Rhule ever beat a ranked team but maybe once?
