MJ, Hard Knocks, and Exceeding Expectations

I don't think that draft "pundit" who talked smack about MJ "giving up" knew what a zone blitz is.

or DE Contain. Most likely though, he knows but feels it makes him more legit as a Draft Analyst if he bad mouths a few players. I know a ton of people at work like this.

I don't think there's any doubt that MJ has special talent. But please don't be ignorant to the fact that he did not play 100% all the time. I spoke to Tech coaches as well as a couple of my NFL buddies and they said the same thing.

I thnk in the long run MJ is going to be very special.

Mover, was he worse than other players? Seems like you could say that about alot of players these days but MJ got singled out more than any other player coming out last year throughout CFB. Doesn't really matter though, cause he got drafted, signed a contract, and by all accounts is tearing it up.

but MJ got singled out more than any other player coming out last year throughout CFB..

He was also vying for first round money and if someone is going to make an investment like that, they are going to do their homework. So not playing tough 100% of the time is a deal breaker for most when it comes to having to pay them first round money. We may have had others that didn't play hard from play to play, but they weren't being considered as first round draft picks.

MJ got singled out because he had first round talent. No one cares to talk about the scrubs.

Absolutely love the Hard Knocks show, but it is not necessarily bad to not have attention on you for that show. Normal doesn't get good ratings. OchoCinco, Tank Johnson, Rey Mal<alooga>, the RB battle, the fat FB, hurt Carson Palmer, etc get ratings. They showed MJ putting pressure on the Patriots (during the game) and also getting a tackle in the Oklahoma drill. He has shown during the tribal dance and several times lifting weights.

There is no need to do anything special on MJ this year. He is just a 3rd round pick to most fans outside the state of Georgia.

I was referring more to players from other teams who were also expected to go in the top rounds of the draft. I'll certainly believe RM though. Pardon me for being skeptical of some NFL Network Analyst who criticizes MJ but says nothing of Knowshon "Must come out after every carry" Moreno.

I'm sure in other cities or college towns where a player has under performed they are saying the same thing. I tried to tell MJ after the Miss. St. game he needed to pick it up a notch. Sometimes kids listen sometimes they don't . I don't fault him because he has no idea who I am and that's OK. All I know is if someone came up to me and said something I would take notice.

He will be fine and I look forward to watching him this fall when he's on.

Nah man, I think that title has to go to Chase Daniels, especially in the early part of the season. I don't know how many mornings I turned on college gameday only to see clips non stop of how Daniels lines up further behind the line in the shotgun because he's short, or how he doesn't have the arm to throw a proper out route. Then he went from heisman contender to the most undersized, undertalented, overachiever in college football who might not get drafted. I know MJ was heavily scrutinized last year, but there were other players at other schools who got it worse.

You said that to him AFTER the Miss State game???

Mover, that was his best game of the year, right?

There is no doubt that Johnson was amazing at times and disappeared at times. My question is, why? Would you blame attitude, effort, conditioning, technique, some flaw in his game?

For me, it seemed that blocking him low was a problem for him. So many DL's get frustrated and even "spit the bit" when you go after the legs. Plus, he did not disengage well from blockers. How to use his strength to shed blocks, and better footwork to keep from getting blocked low should be coaching points the pros will work on. While he has great upper body strength, very little of his weight was in his butt and upper legs. Weight room can help with that, because if you have a high center of gravity pro tackles are going to move you.

What do others suggest?

This is his problem, for sure. Your power all comes from your base, and his is very narrow. I think you'll see him play off the LOS in the NFL. He's an extremely athletic OLB who can play sideline to sideline, and in either backfield on any play, and who also can play some rush DE on clear passing downs.

I'm not sure this can be dealt with in the weight room. A large base in more genetic that anything, like big hips for a basketball center. He can increase lower-body strength, but lower body bulk will be tough for the return on investment he gets (or doesn't get).

That's kinda funny. If I had just dominated a team the way MJ dominated MSU, I probably wouldn't have listened to you either.

And then you probably would have lost tens of millions of dollars by falling to the third round too :p.

Sounds like you pretty much miss the point I was making too him.

If I were your boss I would think twice about giving you more responsibility than you deserve considering to would not take advice very well. Or maybe you are just perfect and you don't need to get better.

Anybody else watching the HBO show Hard Knocks about the Bengals training camp and disappointed in the amount of coverage for MJ?

Well despite that...

Marvin Lewis says:
"Johnson is as physical and as fast as any rookie he's ever been around. Johnson has exceeded expectations"

First post. My thinking is that they're saving a solid 5 minute segment on MJ for one of the next few episodes. If you watch the opening you can see a clip of him working out. I figure they wouldn't have filmed him working out alone unless they plan on hyping him up a little. I mean what else can you get excited about if you're a Bengals fan?

Also... glad to be on here. I've been a stingtalk stalker for about a year now. My Dad went to GT and raised me as a GT fan and my older brother was at the Naval Academy when CPJ first started out there. I'm a big fan of him and his coaching style and I was lucky to do some post grad math work at GT last year and attend every home game. I noticed a couple things guys weren't mentioning that I thought should have been, like CPJ on Scott Van Pelts podcast, and I figure I'd throw in a couple more cents into the pile...

There was a picture in the Cincinnati Enquirer of MJ doing a sit-down interview with the Hard Knocks folks with one of their articles before the series began, so figure he will get his feature just like Rey Maualuga and Chase Coffman
