Nesbitt

It was a little aggrivating at times going with the B-Back Dive on 1st down and only getting 1 yard out of it. Then to pass on second down and miss setting up a long 3rd down conversion. Not converting a 3rd down until the 4th quarter? Unacceptable! I was hoping to see the shovel pass play we saw in the spring game on some of those 3rd and mid downs. The pass Roddy dropped I think the cast played a role there. If no one respects the pass, we're going to be in for a long season. I agree with other posters that if the B-Back Dive is being stifled and the pitch is being pretty well covered, just drive up for 3 yards, man! Definitely all those 3 and outs hampered our D too.

I'm happy with the win but some times I think we try to do too much. Short passes like the one to AA late in the game are what we need to do more of to keep some of the defenses honest.

Gotta give props to Clemson though - they are very athletic and owned us on the line. Sadly line play is too integral to our success because I think that's where we have the most work.

I will never in my life question whether CPJ know what he is doing, but he has always said that we'll take whatever the defense gives us. Last night they were not giving us the deep ball yet we kept looking for it. If the pass were our bread-and-butter, I'd say keep pounding and eventually we'll get it going. But the pass is our exception, so I just don't get the persistence with such a high-risk play. Of course, I may have just answered my own question (high-risk = high-reward).

Save for the first down INTS, most of the pass plays were on 3rd and 5+ yards. I think many people are failing to take that into account. I realize that 3rd & 5 is frequently a running down for us but we weren't having any success when we tried.

It was a vicious circle, with our lack of good yardage on first and second down leading to passing on third down, which made us very predictable which tempted PJ to pass some on 1st down to mix it up which ultimately did no favors for the running game.

I don't think the problem was that we passed too much. We just didn't pass well, and we're going to have to be able to do so at some point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that when Nesbitt kept the ball on those last two drives we weren't running a triple option but a zone-read/'double option'. I think those plays were designed to go to either Nesbitt or Dwyer because they were covering the pitchman well after the first few series and crashing down on Dwyer

Don't know about the "zone read/double option" but the points the same. If they are taking away options 1 and 3 then you have to take option 2 (or pass). If it was a double option only then that was CPJ's way of making Josh run the ball.
