New Asst HC(Def) - David Turner

Should we be excited?

I mean, the resume looks good. Remember Coleman had almost no coaching experience when he came here, so Turner's got him beat on that. I don't know anything else about him, but if he's been consistently employed at the P5 level for nearly 30 years, he must be doing something right.

Coaching Experience
1986: Davidson (running backs/tight ends)
1987: Davidson (linebackers)
1988-89: NC State (graduate assistant)
1990: Indiana University of Pennsylvania (defensive line)
1991-92: James Madison (assistant coach)
1993-94: Kentucky (defensive ends)
1995-96: NC State (defensive tackles/linebackers)
1997-2000: Virginia (defensive tackles/linebackers)
2001: Minnesota (defensive ends)
2002-05: Vanderbilt (defensive line/recruiting coordinator)
2006: Alabama (defensive ends)
2007-09: Mississippi State (defensive line)
2010-12: Kentucky (defensive line)
2013-15: Mississippi State (defensive line)
2016-17: Texas A&M (run defense coordinator/defensive tackles)
2018: Texas-San Antonio (defensive line)
2019-21: Florida (defensive line)

Looks good to me.

I think it's interesting that we now have two "assistant head coaches" and neither is the offensive or defensive coordinator. Is there some weird hierarchy here where coordinators are lower than position coaches? Or is this a case of needing to add a title to justify the salary it took to pry him away from his last school (as was probably the case with Key, as well?)

I don't think he was pried away from UF. He was on Mullen's staff so probably not retained by Napier.

Assistant Head Coach Defense.

Is this just a title thing? Key is Assistant Head Coach already.

I dunno if there is a limit to how many guys you can give that title to, actually. I *think* it's probably just a title thing and a way to justify him making more than the position coaches and probably as much or more than Thacker. It's definitely unclear to me who is the actual defensive coordinator in practice, rather than title. I'm wondering if it's going to be Collins and Turner mentoring Thacker somehow. My speculation is Collins feels bad that he put Thacker in that spot when he wasn't ready for it.

I hope we find out exactly what Turner is responsible for and exactly what Thacker is responsible for.

This is puzzling.

Not sure if it was mentioned already (I'm multitasking), but he will be the run game coordinator among other things.

My cynicism points toward having this set-up to blame when things go up in flames during the season. Maybe somebody's getting set up to be the scapegoat.
Of course, we could win some games and make that moot. But until I see that happen, my level of optimism for any move remains zero. That way, I don't get overly disappointed with another wretched season but could be happy if things go well.
