New Auburn DC named......

It's true...

Roof was before my time... What's his story? I know he was here with O'leary what else is there to know?

I'll put is this way - in his one year as DC at GT, we beat Clempson 45-42, lost to F$U 41-35 and UVA 45-38 (blew 17 point lead in Charlottesville), beat UGAg in OT because 48 points weren't enough to win in regulation.

He played on our famous black watch defense in '85.
He was our D-coordinator from '99-01.
He was Duke head coach from '03.5-07.

He had a bad rep here as a DC because our '99 defense was the worst in school history. If we even had a mediocre defense that year, then Lil Joe wins the Heisman and we probably finish Top 5. Roof got better. Our '00 and '01 defenses were pretty solid. '99 wasnt completely his fault either. We were decimated by injuries and the cupboard wasn't exactly full to begin with.

And he can seriously recruit in the state of Georgia. I personally hopes he kicks some Dawg butts too in their annual game. He is still one of my favorite Tech players ever.

I only wish the best for Ted. He's managed to get coaching jobs with all kind of anchors tied to them.
Good luck at Auburn Ted.

Ted Roof was the leader of our Black Watch defense that returned GT football back to being competitive in 1985. He played the All-American Bowl against Michigan St that year injured. He was in incredible pain...but whenever he left the game Lorenzo White would rip off a good run. We ultimately held Lorenzo to something like 140 yds on 44 carries. That same game John Dewberry and Gary Lee were suspended for missing curfew...plus the backup FB.

Anyway....he is a good coach and a phenomenal recruiter.

As someone else has said....the biggest problem he had at GT was being the DC under George O'Leary....a know it all on defense. Roof likes to mix things up, show different blitz packages, etc. Once O'Leary was gone....Roof was able to fully coach us in the bowl game and we shut down our opponent and looked completely different defensively.

This is a good pickup for Auburn.

Good luck to him. Hopefully he'll do well as the interim HC when Auburn fires Chizik midseason.

I don't believe I have ever heard that season encapsulated so succinctly or so correctly. Bravo.

Tenacious, hell-bent-for-leather player. But would you swap Wommack for him?

The only game he was truly DC was the bowl game where he shut out one of the top offenses in the country that year.

Stanford was ranked something like #10 going into the bowl game.

The rest of the time O'Leary demanded he run a bunch of plain look NFL type schemes.

He also did not have as many good players on defense Because Ralph got first choice on offense I heard.

Thank you for saying this.

Yea I played with Ted and am a very loyal friend too him but I have had too defend him on here countless times. Majority of people don't or wouldn't listen when I defended him. Hiver, thanks.

I hope Ted does well, except when we're recruiting against him. The only funny thing about our loss to Duke when he was interim coach was him inviting everyone to his house after the game for a party and giving the address. Of course, it being Duke and all, I don't think anyone showed up.

I loved Ted as a player. Wish him the best except against us.

I remember the GT vs Clemson game (1983 or 1984) - A certain Refrigerator Mover moved a certain Refrigerator all over the field. Roof led the defense and I think he was the one that made a huge hit about the 7 yard line and the fumble went about 20 feet straight up. GT ball when it came down.

GT was just turning it around under Curry and Clemson has been good for 3-4 years. Clem was flooding the exits by the middle of the 4th quarter.

Ted Roof!

:wow:

I'm glad to see Ted Roof getting another chance. I think he is a good coach and I enjoyed meeting him while he was at Tech. The players I knew thought highly of him. And he had to play second fiddle to offense under O'Leary.

Not a problem..and not that he needs my defending.

I remember coming on to campus as a true freshman as he was exiting....and even as a graduating student he carried himself like a professional, and someone that treated everyone with respect. In the years to come after I graduated I came to respect him even more than as a player.

I felt sorry for him at times as a coach as i watched O'Leary rip him in front of the players. Ted would want to throw some blitz packages in and O'Leary insisted that if the DL alone could not get the pressure on them then that was his problem.

When O'Leary ditched us for ND and MacWhorter let Ted develop his own game plan for the bowl game against #10 Stanford....Ted had multiple looks and had players coming from every direction...much like what many like Tenuta for.

I have never spoken to a coach or player that worked with, or for, Ted that did not think he was a first class representative of Georgia Tech...and a good coach.
