Next Offense

Find me another team whose offense:

1) Has been as consistently good as ours since 2008
2) Operates with a similarly inferior talent base compared to their opposition

Do that and I'd be fine switch over to that one.

I don't mean that rhetorically... I really don't know of one. I'll research it later but the only ones I can think of that were as good had more talent than us.

How many schools have run the same offense under the same coach since 2008?

You're going to have a pretty small sample to pick from.

I'm not contending anything other than the fact that Briles had some incredible skill position players which undoubtedly helped his offense be more successful. Even RG3's successor is in the NFL now.

I mean, that could be because they were coached and developed or something. I wouldn't know.

Their recruiting classes are almost exactly like ours. Primarily 3 stars with a rando 4 star here and there.
Not over time, they haven't been. We recruited very few "rando 4 star" players up until the past few classes.

Rivals Recruiting Rankings:
Ok St
2017 - 36
2016 - 45
2015 - 38
2014 - 27
2013 - 36
2012 - 32

Average: 35.6

GT
2017 - 41
2016 - 67
2015 - 39
2014 - 47
2013 - 84
2012 - 56

Average: 55.6

Regardless, I did say that they clearly outperform their talent. I think that Gundy is a very good offensive coach and I would be fine with running that system.

Two of those guys ran sub-4.4 times, hence the Bay Bay comparison. Seriously, imagine our offense with a Heisman winning QB under center and Demaryius Thomas on both sides.

We recruit at such a low level because of the offense.

Chan recuited great his last few years. It can be done again. Insert bullshit excuse “but why did Chan do with those recruits”
Chan recruited ONE great class - his last one in 2007. His rest were right on par with what we have now. His 2nd to last class (2006) had 16 players, and 6 of them were 2 stars. Only one 4 star guy, and it was ööööing Jamaal Evans.

I don't disagree with your overall point, but I don't think it's all about the offensive scheme. Dabo Swinney could run the triple option and roll in top 10 classes at Clemson if he wanted to and had elite assistants like he has now. CPJ is an average recruiter, and his staff are also average when it comes to recruiting. We could do better, and have to if we want to avoid years like this one.

I just said that my post was not rhetorical. I'm genuinely curious, because from my eyes nobody out there is doing better with our type of talent. Instead of making cracks about the offense, how about providing some data?
North Dakota State has a better offense than ours and puts more QB's into the NFL than ours. Can we do as good as North Dakota State?

Look at the offensive skill position talent Briles had at Baylor, just off the top of my head.

Robert Griffin (1st round pick 2012)
Kendall Wright (1st round pick 2012)
Josh Gordon (2nd round pick 2012)
Terrance Williams (3rd round pick 2013)
Corey Coleman (1st round pick 2016)

That's like having Joe Hamilton and 3 Demaryius Thomases at the same time.

That said, I'd take that style in a heartbeat. It's as fun to watch as the 3O when it's working. Unfortunately, Baylor's defense was somehow just as bad as ours, otherwise they would have been a playoff team.
Maybe Briles molded them into NFL talent?????

But that doesn't fit your narrative.

I believe Briles molded those guys into elite athletes the same way I believe CPJ gave Bay Bay 4.38 speed.

I'm openly looking for facts to challenge my "narrative.". Don't know how else I can say that. Ok State and Baylor are great examples of offenses consistently overachieving, although I'd argue both have had more talent than us (especially Baylor under Briles).

Dr. Homer Rice would have loved CPJ's offense seeing how he wrote a book on the Triple Option.
*would have*? Did Homer pass away and somehow I missed it? Dude's still out and about you know.

We recruit at such a low level because of the offense.

Um, no. We recruit at our level because GT in an unfun school where everyone has to actually go to class. Plus ten other related reasons.

I'm okay with fixing that, but you'll need to go private to do it.

Monken would be a good replacement for CPJ in a few years.
It depends on how things go between now and then. If 2018 is a repeat of 2017 and PJ retires, I can't envision us going with another option coach, even if Monken sets the world on fire. Honestly my ideal situation would be that CPJ has another 2014-type season, sustains some success, and goes out on top with a natural successor like Monken that knows what it takes to win at GT. We won 20 games in 2 years with Monken on staff, so I'd be happy with him as coach,

If we fire CPJ, then hiring Monken probably won't happen. If CPJ retires, then it might. I prefer the latter. If we fire CPJ, then our program is doomed, the fellowship of the miserable will get exactly what they want, which is true misery, and I'll probably just go watch Army play or something.

No way, stick around. We're going to need devotees for the Fighting Shot Glasses brigade, whose mission is to attend every game and remember nothing at all. Bonus, tickets will be cheap.

Moar option....bring back some wishbone

There were more changes to come. The wishbone lasted one more season at Georgia Tech before Rodgers, following the trend that eventually would sweep away most of the run-oriented offenses from major-college football, switched to a more conventional scheme centered on Ivery at tailback and relying on more pass plays. It's a move the old coach still regrets.

"I never should have done that," Rodgers moaned. "The wishbone is the best offense ever invented. It's the only offense where you can effectively block everybody."
