Next Offense

Our coaches have done a great job at putting our QBs in a position (always from under center, more often than not trying to run routes too long, etc.) to almost guarantee failure.

If the passing game showed more success then sewak’s flop & bite blocking would have to change, and the fans might demand more passing. That would make our O genius look like he may not have been perfect.

It's baffling how our O genius continues to make our RH QB take snaps under center and roll to his left (rather than right), where he has to take extra time to turn and plant his feet before throwing the football to a WR running a long post route, all while the swiss cheese OL has let defenders come crashing thru at him, time and again. There were 3 short routes I recall seeing on Saturday - all had wide-open WRs that TQ missed with laughably-bad throws. We need more of those and fewer 5-second post-bomb routes. And a QB who can actually throw.

I don't want CPJ fired this year, nor will he be (although Roof is another story), but he won't be around forever. He'll either retire in several years or, if things don't improve, he'll be fired. I've often thought of what it would take or what the best next step would be for us after moving on from CPJ. I understand some of you want another TO guy/CPJ disciple after he's gone, which makes some sense.

However, I think I've decided that an offense like Auburn's would be best. We would be able to...
-Run it immediately with our current personnel.
-Recruit more effectively because it doesn't have quite the same stigma as the TO (for some reason).
-Have a more balanced offense. For example, Auburn threw the ball 29 times on Saturday and that's about average for them.
-Give us the ability to switch to another type of offense entirely after that. For example, if things don't work out, we can switch back to the TO or switch to a pro-style/more traditional spread offense and I believe we'd be better positioned from a personnel standpoint to do that after a few years with this type of offense than we would if we made the switch straight from the TO.

Thoughts?

How's this a positive? The current personnel is the problem.

We've been better than a 6-5 team five out of the past ten years, and I'm not sure we've had a QB who can consistently throw accurately any of those years.

JT wasn't a bad thrower. At least not as bad as this one.

But who are we going to bring in that will change the current personnel immediately? That's impossible. We have who we have right now. Then, hopefully, we can build on it from there.

JT was a naturally good thrower, considering his height limited his ability to see over defenses. With good protection, he was effective passing most of the time.

Why can't we just recruit a QB that is 6-3 or taller and heavier than 220 lbs, is an accurate passer that can run when necessary. Not just because that is 1st instinct.

If we could get one with all of the good qualities of Joe Ham(just taller), George Godsey, Jared Stitham, Baker Mayfield, Tajh Boyd, Woody Dantzler, or Deshaun Watson.

Yeah!! And let’s just sprinkle in some Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers for kicks.

I am serious no QB under 6-2/ 220 lbs and whose 1st instinct isn't to take off when things are getting hairy in the pocket. When he does take off he can get downhill quick and lay the lumber to the LB/DBs.

what is this "pocket" that you speak of?

CPJ won't ever have a QB who can't run the dreaded QB Dive Option Keeper, like TQ does 20 times/game. That play was a huge part of our offense this year - the ol' QB-No-Option-Keeper. Sooooo exciting!!!!

we should run the old single wing offense. every snap is a "shotgun" and it can go to any of 3 backs, one of whom is a better passer!

Sure. Because nobody else in the country is recruiting those kind of players. Also one with a 1200 SAT and 3.5 or higher high school GPA, Eagle Scout, who goes to Africa to build sanitation infrastructure on his summer break. Also gay so the ratio doesn't bother him.

I'm just exasperated that CPJ can't find a QB like that. I mean crap, they grow on trees.

21st in FBS in scoring efficiency even in a bad year...

(Please don't insult the board's intelligence by responding with cherrypicked bad games.)
That should make us all feel better about losing to Duke and 5 other teams.
