Predicted 8-4 this past year while many were predicting 10-2. I'm going with 2-8 this year (0-4 start). Time will tell

BDG, I went way out on a limb and predicted 11-1 for last year. I am like the gambler who is behind in his betting and am doubling my bets to break even.

Risky business!

ahso,
We certainly have the talent level to accomplish your gold-colored glasses scenario. And if we had the coaching to go with it, the sky would be the limit.

Last year, I picked 10-2 minimum, in spite of Chan. However, after attending 8 games in person last year, and watching them all on tv, I would have to have some extra thick gold-colored glasses to overlook our coaching deficiency....especially now that we have lost one of our best coaches to the Fridge (the rich just get richer and richer).

If this team were coached by the Fridge or Grobe, I would be inclined to pick 10-1. But with Chan at the helm, 2-9 is certainly a sad possiblity.

I will give a vote of confidence to our fine players and say that they will partially overcome the lack of coaching and perhaps win 7 games.

Let us hope.

Ahso, you made some good but optimistic points about your projection of our team's success. I hope you are right and that my expectation is not even close. We have too many questions marks on our team for me to be overly optimistic. Beginning with a qb-we don't have an established qb and really have no idea who our offensive leader will be. We were weak in our DB area and the jury is still out on who will play and how effective they will be after the coaches anoint their starters. We had a gaggle of injuries and we don't really know how many will return or if they do just how effective they will be. And then we have the COACHING. We don't know who the OC will be or if he will have a free rein to run his offense or if Chan will interfere with him. ST was a crapshoot and this still hasn't been addressed, or at least we haven't been privy to news how CG will go about rectifying another big hole. But our staff seems to be in a state of flux
and we could all be pleasantly surprised when the dust has settled. But based on all these IF's I will go on record as projecting a less than 500
winning percentage. Man I hope i'm wrong.

BeeWare, if we go 10-2 this year, will you say O'Brien was part of the problem for the past two years?

If we win 6 or more I will feel like an idiot. 4-8 is just as possible as 0-12. Too many question marks for a VERY tough early schedule. It is a prescription for possible disaster.

ahso, just a question...not a flame, but just what do you base the following on..."if Chan is as good as his history indicates"? THWG

GoldZ, I am referring to the items in his bio, not this past year's performance. I am hoping this past year was an aberaration due to some possible internal problems.

His bio stated he won a national championship at Troy State, that he has been effective at every stop in his coaching career, even against some bad obstacles like Jones of the cowboys. I have nothing else to go on other than this, but his bio did sound promising to me.

I was not impressed with the performance last year, but am hoping the problems are clear for a good run this year. I realize my position is weak at this time, but still hoping.

Maybe part of my hope is hinged on the old statement, "will the real Chan Gailey please stand up!".

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">ahso,

As you know, I usually enjoy your posts. But you outdid yourself on this one. I laughed so hard, I went to one knee.

I am mentally entitling this last post you made as "damning with feint praise". It is the best Dave Braine impersonation I have ever seen.
Thanks.

Interesting comments all. Those that have been predicting good things since early last season continue to do so.

Those that have predicted doom and gloom continue to do so.

And finally, those sitting firmly on the fence continue to remain there.

So I will take a seat on the fence and wait for more data before I make a prediction, the hiring of an OC, and spring practice.

Count me on the fence too. There are too many unknowns to make any valid assumptions either pro or con. Sure do wish August would arrive so one can again cheer the brave and bold @BDS@HGF.

I may not be sitting on the fence, but I do have one foot on the fence and holding to the top with one hand in case I have to make a quick exit back to the other side.

I am not on the fence, period. I am ready to go to spring practice. Anyone know when it starts, and will there be Saturday practices?

If I had to wager, I'd say we win 7 games.

I think the home schedule helps us but a young QB
may cost us a chance or two.

Now...If we have a QB step up early in the season
then I think we can win 8-9 games.

We should be VERY glad to have the home schedule
we do this next season...

March 14th which is a Friday is when I heard practices starts. I'm not sure of the schedule, but they usually have some practices on Sat and some scrimmages as well.

Ahso I appreciate your optomism but am not sure those observations are realistic considering our qb situation along with the injuries and inexperience of our team as a whole and the lack of time our coaches will have to coach them up now that we should have no distrations on the staff. I believe an 8 and 4 would be exellent but a 6+6 would not be terrible when you look at the schedule. By the way I do not believe our talent level was as good over all as we were made to think when Oleary left. How many have gone to N.F.L. which is a good judge of players. Just my opinion.

2003 GEORGIA TECH FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Aug. 28, at Brigham Young (Thursday)
Sept. 6, AUBURN
Sept. 13, at Florida State
Sept. 20, CLEMSON
Sept. 27, at Vanderbilt
Oct. 4, NC STATE
Oct. 11, at Wake Forest
Oct. 23, MARYLAND (Thursday)
Nov. 8, at Duke
Nov. 15, NORTH CAROLINA
Nov. 22, at Virginia
Nov. 29, GEORGIA

Before anyone jumps to the wrong conclusion, I am not stating we will be favored in these games, but whether we have a fair chance of winning the game. I think we have a fair chance of winning every game on our schedule if Gailey is as good as his past history indicates.

If the trend is the same as last year, then all bets are off. If our new offensive coordinator is Spence, Petersen, or Nix, and Tenuta shores up the pass deficiency, we could reach the expectations I had envisioned for last year.

With this in mind and some rumored changes of a new wide receivers coach, and a new emphasis on the special teams coaching, I offer these comments.

We have better material than BYU and should beat them at their place in the first game. If we lose this game, it could become a rough season, and the expectations for the remainder of the season would quickly fall.

Since we have Auburn in our back yard and a win over BYU in Provo, the team should be up to the challenge. It will be a renewal of a great past tradition, and the stadium would probably be packed with Tech fans. It will be a tough game, but it will be a winable game if we have already beaten BYU.

With two wins under our belt, we could possibly win our first game against FSU at their place in the new era. Our team confidence should be high at this time, and we would have just played against a strong opponent (Auburn) which should have us prepared for FSU. Another factor, Florida State's program is beginning to crumble and their fans and team are not as confident as several years ago.

With Clemson at our house and three good games under our belt, they should be ours for the taking. I really think Clemson is having some internal problems and this could be Tommy's last year if they do not fare well.

Vanderbilt will probably be a tough game. If we win the first four, it would be easy to get overconfident, and Vanderbilt could be one of those dangerous games on the road. We need to keep an eye on them early to see if their second year with the new coach brings better results in their early games. It is a game we could win, but a very dangerous one.

If we beat North Carolina State at their house with Rivers, we should be able to beat them at our house with a new and improved offense. If we are undefeated at this point, this could be a war, but we have the capability to win it.

Last season should be enough of a factor to ensure that Tenuta prepares correctly for the WF offense. With an improved offense, we should beat Wake Forest at their place. We are still their superior in talent. We will see if our coaching can overcome their's.

Since I hold Friegden in high esteem, I believe things can only get better at Maryland. It is not within the realm of impossibility that Maryland could win them all this year. However, we do possess the talent, and hopefully with a newly revised staff, have the ability to knock them off at Boddy Dodd Stadium. Another big game to test our mettle.

If we have won all the games to this point, or at least lost only two, we should beat Duke there. Duke may be improved this year, and we would be foolish to be too overconfident, but it is our game for the taking if we want it bad enough.

Even though North Carolina has recruited very well in the past two years, we should beat them at home.

Virginia has proven, up through the end of this past year, they are headed in the right direction. If their trend continues, they will be an extremely tough opponent. If we are undefeated or have only a couple of losses at this point, this could be a war of epic proportions at their place. They could be the favored team, but we should possess the ability to upset them there. It would take a very well coached game and a game of few errors, but we could win there.

If all goes well through this schedule and we are undefeated or lost only a couple, We beat Georgia at home and send Richt back to Athens with his first defeat. Make no bones about it, we will have to have a very good offense to beat UGA. Georgia's greatest asset this past year was its defense. They appear to have a good defensive coordinator. However, we can beat them with a well-coached team as shown in the recent past with three straight victories.

This year is similar to O'Leary's last year when we had a tremendous advantage in the teams we played at home. We play some of the weakest teams on the road and some of the strongest at home where we have the home field advantage.

Since this year is eerily similar to GOL's last year, it should be a good comparison to this year's team.

Talk about gold colored glasses!

I think 6-6 is likely. 8-4 would be very good against this schedule.
