NIU Rewatch thoughts

I don’t really agree with this; not disparaging Yates at all, but the starter shouldn’t lose his job to an injury. Yes, Sims stunk the place up before he was injured, but he didn’t have a chance to come back and show he had his head on straight.

Giving the starting role to a backup after the starter was injured (and recovered) was one of the things that caused Lewis to lose his team.

But I would expect Sims to be pulled if he continues to play poorly.
Huh? CGC would’ve been justified in yanking Sims after he missed a wide open receiver in the end zone. Yates should play bc he played better. The injury forced CGC’s hand but if Sims loses the start it’s not due to injury, it’s due to poor play.

I don't agree with all of that, but you are to be commended for suffering through that a second time.

Agreed - Sims actually missed two if not three potential TD passes which is more than enough to justify sitting him down. Even if for one or two series. He's only a sophmore - its not like sitting a 4-yr starter.

So we have 4 really good backs, why not use them all? Gibbs should get most touches but there’s got to be ways to keep a rotation going. You do that and you keep him fresh.
you don’t spout off how great the rb’s are just to have them sitting on the bench.

I believe Choice decides who to send out there at RB. I trust his judgement on who should be in the game to give us the best chance to win.

I watched the replay and folks here are way overreacting. Yes, I see some wasted timeouts, but you see that the first game of the season everywhere. Yes, we reacted poorly to hurry up. Yes, our D calls seem late, but again it's the first game.

Sims was not as bad as folks think. He was short arming his first few out passes but a couple of the "WIDE OPEN" type were not easy. Gibbs was wide open downfield but had his back turned to Sims. I have looked at that many times, where was Sims supposed to try and throw the ball.

I like what Yates did too but Sims adds strong running, play them both.

We better put some athletes on the defensive side of the ball this weekend.

But it was NIU's first game, too...

This is the one really bad miss that bugged me – 1st and 10 from the NIU 33, overthrows a wide open Nate McCallum.

The issues with struggling vs the hurry up and getting the defensive play call in (you should also add subbing players in/out) have been problems since year one and have not been improved.

Sims crushed it for 2.5 quarters in a way that sims didn't. The performance between the 2 couldn't be more divergent. If competition is king, yates gets the start.

Hard to play 4 guys at RB. I like him and Smith a lot too, but do you want Mason and Gibbs to get less touches?
It comes back to the argument for a 2 back set and scheming around our talent, not some notion of balance.

This. Also line up Gibbs or Smith at slot or WR occasionally and create challenges for the defense.
Or use motion out of a 2 back set

Drew Bledsoe, is that you?

I wanted to see if it was actually as bad as it felt Saturday night. Figured a fresh set of eyes would do a lot of good. We should've boat raced niu, and I'm concerned that we weren't physically superior enought to overcome bad play calls and poor execution.

But some of the things that felt egregious didn't seem as bad on replay and I felt I had a better understanding of what needs to change and whose head needs to roll.

Top of the list is who decides we need to have rb depth riding the pine while unproven te get the start

We just seem to think we have the time to run a new defensive scheme in with subs. Very Paul Hewitt like on subbing. We just can't seem to get players off and on the field on defense with a defense called and get set before the snap.

If that's the case, then I have issues with his coaching as well. We seemed to rotate them series by series instead of situationally. They don't have interchangeable skillsets. Yeah, you balance so as not to tip the hand, but that's not what we were doing.

Competition happens during the week in training sessions. Have you been to the practices? If so, who is winning out then?

It looked like we were too locked in on having specific guys in on specific downs/distances rather than based on NIU’s personnel. Had we waited for NIU to sub, they they would have had to wait to snap the ball until after we subbed.
