Trying to move beyond approval/disapproval based on whether we won or lost last week, here is what I like about Collins: enthusiasm, recruiting energy, love for Georgia Tech, trying to be positive about the reasons to come play for Georgia Tech.
Here is what I don’t like:
1. Game day he is too hyper. He is jumping out to coach offense, defense, special teams, animated every play. Let staff coach. Stay focused and calmer. Make key decisions well.
2. Just don’t see a clear offensive or defensive philosophy that players understand and execute. One of my favorite Saban quotes, “Good teams have tendencies.”
3. Too much overstatement and hyperbole. Some of his banter is fun. But, ultimately, substance trumps style.
4. Too much reliance on recruiting to solve everything eventually. Success requires a wholistic approach by the head coach to make sure recruiting, conditioning, player retention, player development, academic progress, practice, scouting, development of offensive, defensive and special teams approaches and schemes, now NIL opportunities, relationships with high school coaches, media relations, and who knows what else. Head coaches have to be sure that all facets of the program are on schedule. I don’t see Collins as the non-anxious presence that leads a complex system to succeed.
