OL Improvement in UNC Game

You can't run it down an opponent's throat the way we did in the 4th quarter without an OL that's dominating the LOS. They knew we were going to run and just couldn't stop it. It was beautiful to watch.
How very fitting for CPJ night. 4Q reminded me a lot of the 14 Orange Bowl performance.

This was big. OL allowed no sacks and played disciplined.

Look no further:

Q1: 12 rushes 43 yards (rush/pass ratio: 55%)
Q2: 12 rushes 49 yards (rush/pass ratio: 46%)
Q3: 2 rushes 10 yards (rush/pass ratio: 33%)
Q4: 22 rushes 246 yards (rush/pass ratio: 92%)

You can't do that without an OL just steamrolling people.

And for the sharp-eyed among you, yes, we only ran 6 plays in the entire third quarter. Our ToP in Q3 was an unbelievable 104 seconds total.

The 4th quarter of this game reminded me a little bit of our game vs the dwags in 2009. They literally just beat us to death with their OL. That's pretty much what we did to UNC.

Don't have time to look it up but 246 yards on the ground in a single quarter (against an FBS team) has to be in record territory. I don't have a good source for historical stuff by game by quarter.
Not saying the OL didn't abuse uncheat in the 4th but 151 of the 246 came on 3 plays. It was like CPJ fast break offense circa 2009-2014, they knew we were going to run but they also knew they were going to be our bitch.

i really wish I knew the truth. I don’t think I ever will — regarding OL’s.

I think the OL is better this year, but I think a decent amount of that improvement is playing calling (not all drop back, wait forever passes) and King.

My reasoning is plenty of FCS teams play the big boys and move the ball. They can’t be that much more talented. Offensive scheme can help in 1st qtr and keep them fresh and motivated until the 4th.

King/scheme maybe 65-70% of our improvement, the rest is more experience and playing together. We have a walk on OL who is key this year. It’s not all talent.

Another factor was that we played with tempo AND stopped subsititions during our offensive drives.
This prevented UNC from changing out their DL/LBs, which I believe helped us tremendously, either due to fatigue and/or matchups.

One of our drives in the 4th, we ran 9 plays and went 88 yards in 2:50. We had no incompletions, so the clock never stopped. We pushed the tempo basically as fast as we could out of no where and UNC was in a tornado trying to stop us.
About time we did this to someone.

Williams was making a big difference in the O when he was in against BC from what I saw. Maybe the combination of Williams and a reenergized Dontae made the difference.

The TV announcers speculated that UNC might have been feeling cumulative fatigue from the UVA game and our rushing attack. I dunno, considering they got the third quarter off, it’s weird that they were gassed, but we were definitely running it down their throats in the 4Q.

JRjr

And we haven't been winning many 4th quarters.

Ya know, I was just thinking that, sometimes, it only takes one really good O-Lineman to make a huge difference in the overall OL play. Think back to Refrigerator-Mover { https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Davis_(offensive_lineman) } - I can still hear Al Ciraldo saying, "Biiiggg John Davis up over the football" - and Shaq Mason - and I'm sure there are many others from the years when we had good OL's. Those men made a HUGE difference in our OL and TEAM success!

Someone on here said it earlier, that those players elevate the play of the rest of the line. May it be this weekend and for the rest of this season, that we have a consistent, present, vocal leader on the OL that elevates our OL to greatness!!

Go Jackets!! Beat the poo poo out of the Hoo Hoos!!
