Oldest GT game attended?

November 1962... Undefeated Alabama against a lowly GT... GT Upset Alabama... One of the few wins that season...
I was one week old!

Thanks Mid. A story I remember was, before tailgaiting became vouge, people would dress up and go to parties before and after the game. For most of the ladies, that was the most entertaining part. These parties would be held at hotel lobbies near Tech. My friend and his wife would go to the game with another couple. As soon as kickoff took place, the ladies would go to "powder their noses", where they would propmtly catch a cab and go shopping at Rich's and show back up right before games end, time for the next party. The fellows wouldn't even notice they were gone.

First Tech game I ever attended was a game with Kentucky in the mid 50's. Blanton Collier was their coach. I was in the 7th or 8th grade. My friend's father was a Tech alum and had season tickets. We lived in Griffin, my friend and I took the Nancy Hanks train to Atlanta, then a shuttle bus from the terminal to Grant Field. God I loved just being there for the first time. Kind of sad, in this day and time would parents allow two 13 year olds to ride train, alone, to Atlanta? Ours did and so did a lot of parents, they did not have to worry about us being bothered or harmed. So sad !!!
I was at the 1962 Alabama game. I was 11, with a friend that was nine. Both of our parents were at the game but we were in the north stands (bird's eye view of Don Toner's INT to seal the win) and the folks were in the east stands near the Bama crazies. After the big, big, big win the adults were going out to party. They put us on a city bus to Pryor and Alabama Streets where we transferred to the bus out to Decatur. After dark, no problems, got home to the babysitter that was watching my younger sisters. Another world . Done that Nancy Hanks thing myself a couple of times--my mother was Savannah High Class of 1941.

Interesting.
As a kid, I remember that Bisher liked Tech and Outlar liked the Dogs. Were the two papers that much apart? Was one obviously more inclined to support one team over another or did the papers actually support both teams, in general. I'd be curious to hear your opinion on that period versus today's coverage by the paper.

Prior to professional sports, Atlanta was completely behind Tech, was it not? How were the UGA grads living in Atlanta perceived and treated? The UVA governor did a masterful job to get VPI into the ACC, a big plus for a state school. Can you ever imagine a Georgia governor helping Tech or UGA back then and/or today?

The paper was definantly pro Tech pre pro sports. The media loved Bobby Dodd. On a side note, I have missed the multi sequenced photos breaking down a play, often with a circle indicating "ball here":o.
To keep running close to this theads theme, I do remember the 1st Tech game that I had a drink during the game! It was 1975 (I was 15 with college age sisters in the student section). It was a loss to Auburn @ Grant Field with a 4th qtr. pass (we were running the wishbone) to Steve Raible for 80 yds that was called back for illegal man downfield (then 10 yds loss and loss of down) that would have won the game. Bitter pill that was swollowed with whatever was drinks that were being passed my way.

GT vs UVA 1991

I went with my dad and his business partner (GT alum who's now my boss). I think Tech won and I bought a stupid looking GT cycling hat (anyone remember those) that I thought was so cool at the time.

Georgia Tech v Florida State

I believe it was 1954 or 1955. We killed 'em.

Mid 40's (around 46 or 47) Tech vs Navy at Annapolis MD.

I can't just let the oldfog steal this thing since I said late 40's he said mid 40's. Let it be known that:

since I was born in 1942,

and since my mother and daddy were avid GT fans,

and since he was drafted into the Army during WWII, which cause a periond of non attendance for GT games,

and since he and Mom went to a game or two while I was in the womb,

and since life begins when in the womb,

can I get the edge here?

hehehehe, let's hear it from you oldfoggy. Can you beat that?

Besides all that, the running boards should give something away.

As the saying goes the 1st liar doesn't have a chance if we take your premise I still have you beat. Born Nov 37 if the womb counts try the 1st game of 37. Dad also a GT grad class of something like 35 so maybe I was there when still a sperm in my dads eye. I probably went also like 40 or 41 but don't remember thing about it but do remember the Navy game Dodds first year or second as HC as I recall. Long long time ago.

In reality who gives a hoot about when you, I or any one went to their first game, what counts is we all remember our 1st game and have been Tech fans or men ever since.

I concede old fogger,
you got me beat.

Got me beat, brother.
Southern Methodist in 1959 was not my first game but the first I remember anything about. I was 8 years old. My dad was class of 1950 and a staunch attendee before all the kids started arriving. Saw many many Thanksgiving Day games too in the 1950's up until I matriculated in 1968.

Yukon,
Oddly that also was my first game AND I matriculated in 68.
What I remembered was how the QB would throw long to a spot and the WR would run down under it instead of a direct- line pass that a kid like me would throw.A revelation at the time.Could see it great from the North endzone.

Lenny Snow, glad to see you here on Stingtalk. Snow/#41 was my idol/hero as a young boy. Those were the days. #41 is still my favorite number to this day. Steve Harkey also wore it at TECH and did a pretty good job of it. Thanks for the memories!

2003 Homecoming vs NC State was my first time seeing Tech play in person. :o

It was Reggie's freshman year and we beat Philip Rivers who was a senior.

That was my very first game also! My gf at the time was a Wolfpack fan and she bought us tickets thinking they were going to kill us. Philip Rivers never beat the Yellow Jackets!:laugher:

1960 6 @ Georgia 7
Pat Dye blocked Tommy Wells PAT

1962 26 Clemson 9
Tigers wore orange helmets, dark (almost black) purple jerseys in the rain

1962 17 Florida 0
Heavy downpour vs Bobby Dodd Jr & Ray Graves

1962 7 LSU 10
Jerry Stovall's 2nd Half KO TD Return + Joe Auer's infamous drop of Billy Lothridge's potential game-winning bomb....

And I remember being there the day Ted Davis got tossed and suspended for kicking one of the Lawson/Rawson (David? Larry?) - AU had both Lawson & Rawson brothers play - brothers from Auburn in the head. Ted never played another down for Dodd, but played a long time for the Baltimore Colts before becoming a dentist.

ADDED:
"1964: 7 Tulane 6
Saw Tech edge a very bad (a coupla years at 0-10) Tulane team whose QB Bobby Duhon - a Big Lefthander like Bobby Douglass at Kansas would be 4 years later - scared everyone to death."

After that, I didn't go to another game til the 1968 opener against TCU when I started to GT....

I was in Gainesville for the 1962 game but did not attend--my parents went and I stayed with friends.
I still remember the Auer drop on TV--ouch, right thru his mitts. Dodd did to Ted Davis what he felt Bear had failed to do to Darwin Holt. I was a rat, too, at that TCU game.

Sorry, my dates were wrong as it was 1929, not 1917. :hsugh:
Lenny, I hope you still send Doc Harvin a birthday card every year thanking him for about 400 great, great kick-out blocks. I was in the north stands for two of your seasons, and Harvin put on a clinic in many games.

Was '62 UF game in Gainesville?

Maybe it was '61 or '63.... I remember going to some GT-UF game at Grant Field with Tom Shannon, BD Jr., and I think Larry Libatore was still at UF & it absolutely poured all afternoon. Lindy Infante was the main UF RB... and I thought it was '62.. I guess you're right, tho... the 17-18 loss on a last second FG was in Gainesville in '60...

Not a long time ago, but my first GT game was very memorable. It was the 1998 game against virginia when we trailed by I think 21 points going into the 4th. Hamilton had been hurt and he came back into the game and we ended up coming back and winning. At that point I joined just about the whole stadium it seemed like and stormed the field. I will never forget that game.

I was in the womb but in the stands for much of the 71 season but made the UGAG game that November.
