You are correct, I went to the 1971 Peach bowl as a 14 year old and sat near the Ole Miss band and they must of played Dixie a hundred times because it seemed like they scored that many times. I’m 65 and when I was coming up in the 60’s and early 70’s and we heard that tune nobody thought about race, it was just a song that represented the South. Some how in the last 30 years or so some folks decided it was racist. Today those people have a name …. Wokeness. I’ve come to believe anything a white southerner likes is automatically deemed racist. To tell you the truth I’ve reached the age I don’t care what folks think.I’m guessing you are not a 20 year old black man who can play college football.
Well that was great in the 60’s and 70’s when there were few if any black players playing college football. Look around now and you will see that probably 80% of college football players are black and they don’t want confederate flags and Dixie. For the record I am white and 64 years old, but smart enough to realize if I want my football team to win I need to change with the times. I sorry you don’t care what people think anymore. I feel the same way. I am jonesing for VarsityDamn I want some varsity onion rings right now
That’s fine … I’m sure Ole Miss changed their mascot and I assume don’t play Dixie to improve recruiting of black players. But if a fan tailgating in the Grove has Dixie blaring from his speakers does not mean he’s racist, he’s probably just a proud southerner but some woke clown will probably start messing with him, maybe not in Oxford but I could see it happening at GT.Well that was great in the 60’s and 70’s when there were few if any black players playing college football. I think we need to worry more about winning some football games than what people are doing tailgating. So in that respect we agree. That’s fine … I’m sure Ole Miss changed their mascot and I assume don’t play Dixie to improve recruiting of black players. I have the program from the game in my office. Just took the pic.You are correct, I went to the 1971 Peach bowl as a 14 year old and sat near the Ole Miss band and they must of played Dixie a hundred times because it seemed like they scored that many times. Just make sure the wind isn't out of the North.I am actually considering eating at the Varsity Saturday, if my fam is good with it. It has been a while.
Psychedelic. Good times!I have the program from the game in my office. Just took the pic.
Fun fact. The biggest player on EITHER team for the 1971 Peach Bowl was a DT for GT, Brad Bourne, who weighed 245 lbs. The biggest OL for Ole Miss was 229 lbs.
Just Amazing.
I was a kid watching it on TV. The best that I can remember I wish I had psychedelics with me to get through that game as I believe it was pretty bad from a Tech perspective.Psychedelic. Good times!
Arrogance for me is a case of exaggerations compared to results (no matter what Websters says). Like em or not. :>)It’s funny if you like somebody they are self confident. If you don’t like them they are arrogant.
His name tomorrow is Will pLay.Will Lay is a great name.
Yep, we got our butt handed to us that day. I don’t think the team was over the gut wrenching loss to UGA. GT had a talented team returning from the 70 squad that went 9-3, but seemed kind of snake bit in 1971. Had a couple of head scratching losses, especially that one to Army, another game I attended. The Peach Bowl game against Ole Miss was played in a downpour, fortunately my Dad and I were underneath the roof. I could tell he didn’t want to go in that rain but the Peach Bowl tickets were a Christmas gift from him and my mom so he persevered.I was a kid watching it on TV.
