I recall being confused about the down and distance watching that game 34 years ago. I just rewatched and what I can tell is that Moore went out at the 11. The refs assessed the unsportsmanlike penalty on Balkcum after the play from that spot so uva was starting as first and 5 from the six(broadcast graphic showed incorrectly as first and goal) and UVA would be able to get a first down at the one which they converted on the 2nd play. So, then first and goal from the 1 foot line and Tech stuffed them for 3 plays forcing the FG.

Tech was penalized half the distance to the goal after Moore went out of bounds. But was that at the 11 or the 10? Accoriding to Kim, it was first and goal from the 5. If Moore went out at the 11, then the ball would have been spotted at the 5 1/2. If you look at the 1st down play, the ball was just an inch or two shy of the 5, but definitely not the 5 1/2. On both the ensuing plays, UVA made it inside the 1/2 yard line, but it wasn't until the 3rd attempt that the TV shows 1st down again. So, IMO, somebody screwed up somewhere. Either they gave them an extra down, or they didn't give them the first down when they should have. Regardless, as I said, that was one helluva goal line stand by our defense.

Actually, back in the pre-digital days, I just recorded them both simulataneously on my VHS (simulcast), so I didn't have to sync them at all.

Even though it worked out in techs favor, if refs had flubbed this, some on this board would still be talking about the ACC screw job that was attempted but failed.

I went out to Boulder in 2010 to see my alma mater play out there (and lose a close one). It was one of the best experiences I've had. Fantastic place. Book a few days and enjoy the scene.
