Options for OC

So with Nix looking to be gone, anyone have any idea who Gailey would be looking at for his next OC. Would he be looking to promote within or looking to bring in a fresh face?

My gut says he'll look within. Chan has been very clear that Nix was running his offense and following his philosophy, and really he was, things were not all that different this year from years past except some more trickery, and other things that just come from having more experienced players.

But I have no insight into the process whatsoever, and I'm just curious. Any thoughts from those in the know, or more likely from those who want to make some WAGs (Wild Ass Guesses) in hopes that you might be right and can look back and tell everyone you did indeed find that acorn once ;)

I also have no inside information, but my gut tells me that DRad will want to hire a fresh new face.

I have seen Coker mentioned elsewhere. Given his resume, I wouldn't mind seeing a well established offensive guy like him come in to take the OC position on the Flats.

edited: We should probably ask demjackets what he thinks.

That is not really true. We went from a straight ahead power blocking running game to a pulling/trapping running blocking running game which are quite different. We also attempted deep throws a little more also

...and when Taylor came in we ran slants and patterns to the inside instead of sideline. Very different.

The stats showed it. We were 3rd in total offense and 5th in scoring offense. By comparison, we were 6th in total defense and 7th in scoring defense. We were 7th both in red zone offense and red zone defense.

All of that being said...I think we can keep moving forward even without Nix. Too bad it did not work out...time to move on.

Do we have shot in hell at Dirk Koetter, the former ASU coach? He was reportedly Miami's first choice, but he could consider GT a better situation than that train wreck that is Miami.

Plus, from personal experience, Atlanta >> Miami as far as places to live.

Edit: Nevermind, it appears he took the OC job for the Jax Jaguars.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to argue with you and I'll be the first to tell you that while I understand the game and stategy of football better than most people, I'm not an X and Os guy by any means. From my perspective I was just writting the different styles as having a more experienced OL, and a running back who was more inclined to break a long run instead of just pounding away like PJ used to do, who were more able to do what Gaileys overall vision was, but with a few new wrinkles. I won't argue that point.

I will say that our relative positions in scoring/total offense don't say nearly as much about game management/play calling as did the more experienced personel.

Also when Bennet came in, the passes being called expanded, but didnt totally change, just allowed the TEs to be more open and WRs to use middle of field due to Taylors vision/release/whatever.

And I too heard the rumor about Coker from those I know better connected than I am, that he and Chan have gotten on really well in the past when they've intereacted and he'd be willing to spend a year or two as OC while looking for the right HC position. We'll see I guess.

TC's longest run was 46 yards. TC isn't a break-away back. PJ and TC are a little more alike than you think.

Dave Baldwin former OC at Michigan State
Jeff Brohm at Louisville
Paul Petrino former OC at Louisville
Major Applewhite at Alabama
Bryan Harsin at Boise State
Mitch Browning former OC at Minnesota

Alright, we're derailing original intent here. Forget everything I said about the offense and the way its run.

But Choice did get 100 more touches this season than PJ did last (+1 game so do some math yourself) and averaged 1/2 yard more each carry, so take it for what its worth. Not worth arguing about in this context

I always liked Dave Baldwin, the former Michigan St OC, but he singed as OC of New Mexico so that's out of the question. The guy had great sucess at San Jose St and MSU.

Coker is good but I just don't trust what he will do with our limited talent (compared to that of "da U").

Can't come up with any names right now but I would certainly look into "the man behind the man" as far as Offensive systems in Louisville, Texas Tech and Cal.

Coker's offense this year seemed to gain plenty of yards, but they would always turn the ball over before they could get any kind of offense. Their game against us, with them having 4 turnovers and us having 1, was a good example of this.

Also, his firesale after the LSU loss rubs me the wrong way. He definitely did it to save his own tail, but I bet his team did much worse in 2006 because of it.

Absolutelly right, Soldinger, Kehoe and Werner were institutions at "da U" so much that even Edgerrin James complained about sending Javaris to Miami knowing Soldinger would not be the RB's coach. But back to GT if we get Coker get ready to see tigh end over the middle to beat cover two, Miami's old specialty and something we definitely could use.

I wished the man behind the man had worked with Bill O'Brien; alas, it's not always the case.

You're right but all I am saying is lets see how qualified is the next best thing to Leach, Petrino and Tedford within their systems are and take it from there. Call them in see what they can give our offense.

It will interesting to see if CG brings in a seasoned guy to REALLY run the O or a "baby".

If we promote from within, would Geis be the one?

If we are thinking of old coaches like Coker and Fulmer, I would throw Mike O'Cain's name in there. I believe he is QB Coach, not OC at VPI. I think he would fit our staff well.

On a less serious note, we could hire Jeff Bowden. The Noles come on the schedule in '08 for two years, and Bobby always tries to lose to his sons.
