Options for OC

I saw what many others saw on television. On the Wes/Chan radio segment aired just before the game, CG admitted openly that he didn't want to let go but it was best for the program...or words to that effect. He sounded emotional.

Good grief...I hope he did hate to see it happen. Any good leader in any discipline (sports, business, etc.) hates to give up control of something they had managed for years...even when they know it is the right thing to do.

Again...CG was up front and honest about this....he said that it had to heppen because he was not able to keep up with the latest trends and wrinkles in offense. He admitted it was hard...but the right thing.

Not sure how anyone else can see this situation differently.

Anyone but Gailey. If I'm Rad, I don't even ask him his opinions on who to hire.

There's a good idea. Don't give your HEAD coach an option for his staff. This would be why you're NOT DRAD.

Guys...you are letting a bunch of pencilnecks at the AJC make you see something CG did not say and they did not write....just because of a headline.

CG DOES NOT WANT TO BE THE OFF. COORD...NOT AT ALL. However, he is smart enought to know he as to find the right hire or else it does our program no good at all.

Lets just see what happens.

Maybe my sarcasm didn't show through enough. I think the idea of letting DRAD choose our OC without any input from CG is ridiculous.

sorry...nothing surprises me anymore. One moron was suggesting Joe Hamilton for offensive coordinator after he graduates this summer. Good freakin grief!!!

When I re-read my post, I missed the sarcasm too. Joe H. can't even color commentate - keep him off our coaching squad. I'd just like to know who it's going to be before Spring practice.

Pete Mangurian

Tight end coach for the New England Patriots.

Was OC for the Atlanta Falcons under Reeves.

Been in New England for 2 seasons.

Coached with CCG in Denver in early 1990's

And, lives in Atlanta.

Interesting. Very interesting.

I wouldn't mind that hire at all.

Can we get more substance to go with some of the names thrown out there, I'd like to look into the rationale (experience, system, working relationships, etc) some out there are using to pick candidates.

Here is the link to Pete Mangurian's bio on the New England website.

Just finished his 15th season in the NFL so he has his pension.

Also, coached at LSU for 4 years early in career as well as head coach in the Ivy League for a couple of years.

Most importantly, his family still lives here in Atlanta and he's worked with CCG before.

HELL NO!!!!!! The man single handedly has brought about the demise of F$U Football ever since his take over after Richt left for UGAy in 2001.

Never really was sure why everyone was so down on Jeff Bowden. Based on the numbers he did a better job this year than Nix did so I'm not sure why some joke and say he would be a down grade

FSU O yards per game 322 3rd ACC
GT O yards per game 320

FSU O points per game 25.1 4th ACC
GT O points per game 24.2

He got a bad rap by the media because its against Federal law to rip Papa Bowden. If you actually look at his numbers, FSU's offense usually ended up ranked ahead FSU's D in the league, much like this year.

So tell me again why he would be a bad hire for us?

This is completely independent of his quality as a coach, but going out like he did leaves a stigma on him as a coach and as a recruiter, and some people may not wish to listen to him because of how he was pushed out of FSU.

Nix was getting paid $175K and top OC's get paid $300-400K so that would be an extra $125-225K per year. 7 home games times 20K season ticketholders equals 140k so for less than $2 per ticket we can upgrade to a top notch OC.

Good Coaches = Good Players
Good Coaches + Good Players = More Wins
More Wins = More Fans
More Fans = More Revenue

First, these numbers are wrong. The final numbers for the season were:

GT Total Offense 332.07
FSU Total Offense 330.31

GT Scoring Offense 24.93
FSU Scoring Offense 26.54

However, there are 2 major flaws in comparing these numbers, (1) different schedules and (2) scoring "offense" includes all scoring.

(2) is a big deal in this case because our offense got virtually no scoring help all season from defense or special teams, whereas FSU got quite a bit.

IF you want to make a meaningful comparison, then, against common opponents and taking out special teams and defensive scores:

GT Total offense: 360 ypg
FSU Total offense: 306 ypg

GT scoring offense: 24.9 ppg
FSU scoring offense: 19.1 ppg

So you can see GT offense substantially outperforms the FSU offense in an apples-to-apples comparison.

It is probably the overwhelming consensus that Bowden had more overall talent to work with than Nix, as well.

So tell me again why he would be a bad hire for us?
Because if you look at anything more than the misleading top level numbers, he sucks?

Chan only has to go to the nearest mirror to find the man for the job.

That will probably happen .. not because Gailey is the best person for the job (which we all know) but because Tech is broke to the tune of about $100 million I heard (would like to see verification on that). For cost saving, watch Gailey take over the OC position, too.

As a percentage of operating income, 100 million is not a staggering debt. I don't like it as a conservative, but it is far from uncommon for a company to borrow money for an expansion.

I'd be/ I am surprised that we have to pay 8% debt. Maybe we need to take out a new mortgage from lendingtree on the Wardlaw at 5 1/4 for 30 years.

I say we get over the 100MM. Harping on it every time the AA needs to drop a dime is silly. If Rad can't handle this... LOL.

Total debt of $100M is one thing. But to say that we're "broke" to the tune of $100M is stupid. (I know it wasn't you GTCrew...and shouldn't be surprised by the original post). Investing in capital/buildings, etc., is what one does to expand/exist. Servicing the debt and depreciation are what hit the bottom line every year and all told, we're about $3M in the hole I think. Not good, but not insurmountable either.
