Other Schools' Coaching Changes [Now with Colorado's Deion]

Would be surprising to go this route. It’s basically tripling down on the strategy of the biggest failure in program history. And a strategy that doesn’t really align with the broader GT culture.

I think we go with an anti-Geoff hire. Hard ass curmudgeon than wants to talks Xs and Os and didn’t give too öööös about Twitter

Not everyone thinks the strategy behind the Collins hire was wrong. Undoubtedly, the execution was. Truth is, you need both sizzle and steak in today's college football.

I don’t disagree. Just don’t think that we go that way given how big of a failure the current guy has been and the fact that we were successful for 25 years with a sizzleless Xs and Os football coach.

I get what you are saying. The landscape of college football with items such as transfer portal, NIL and social media have changed things forever.
As one poster said earlier, Geff wants to be the player's friend. I think Deion can do some of that but in an adult / accountability way.
The following are the upside reasons on why I would like Deion at Tech:
1. Name recognition Recruiting
No one not named Saban could garner the attention from parents and students alike like Sanders. I argue that Dieon could get as much if not more than Nick. With CDS we would not have to beg potential players to visit. He pulled a five star recruit from committing to FSU to go to Jackson state. We have never had a 5 star recruit come to Tech. An up and coming coach would not be able to get recruiting started until they proved they were a great coach. CDS would recruit well immediately. His presence would be a bit of a media circus but in a good way.

2. The Press loves him.
We haven’t had a coach garner favorable press since Bobby Dodd. He would bring national attention that an up and coming coach could not. Chadwell, Shawn Clark and Matt Rhule could be good at Tech but none of them would generate a media splash. It's hard to find a negative article regarding his coaching. Most importantly the media WANTS him to be successful. There is some talk about him going to Nebraska or Auburn but I doubt those programs would take a chance with a 55 year old coach.

3. CDS will probably only get one shot at a head coaching job at a P5 school.
He is 55 years old and if hired will most likely not jump for another school after building up a team at Tech. He knows Atlanta very well and to say the least Atlanta knows Deion. I suspect other schools are not willing to give him a shot. If we give him a chance I suspect he would be loyal to Tech for the remainder of his coaching career. According to some internet searches he is “old school” in his coaching style.

4. He can coach.
He is results oriented. Not the Collins type but real substantial deliver or else. CDS has been around tons of coaches and he knows what it takes to be successful and win. Accord to his peers he knows what he is doing. I doubt other coaches would be throwing shade on him. Remember the anonymous coach comments regarding Geoff from ACC media days. That would end IMO. It appears he knows how to handle players and his staff. I doubt there are many coaches that can draw from previous locker room and practice experience like he can. His football IQ is from direct experience on and off the field. No one else can say they played at a top ten college football team and succeed in the pros like he has. With his experience with the Pros I would suspect he wouldn’t have a difficult Tim getting top notch coordinators.

I don't care that we "can't afford it". We can if we give a damn. Have to spend money to make money. You think Bama is suffering because they pay Saban 10 million a year? I guarantee their ROI from paying him is through the roof. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the GTAA can't see this.
We won a MNC in 1990 and did we even sell out the next year, in a smaller stadium? I agree that to some extent this is a catch 22 where to some extent you have to spend money to make money, but thinking if some donor paid 10 million to hire Saban we would poof be Alabama is not reality based. They make all that and more just from the SEC TV rights difference.

Having said that, the idea that we need a new edge building more than we need a decent FB and BB team is preposterous. That is where we are pouring the money, and it is as stupid as the Upper North was. The entire budget needs to be focused on the coaches and the players of FB and mens BB. The rest of the teams can earn the scraps they get on their own. I would trade every win in all of those sports for a 500 football team right now.

Those teams need to realize NOW what will happen to them if the ACC gets raided by the Big10 or SEC and we don't make the cut. Our TV rights go to nothing. AA donations and interest go to nothing. Facilities in schools without a successful football and basketball team are certainly normally far inferior to what they have at GT or Clemson or Alabama.

1. I don’t think trying to out-recruit or out-NIL people is a smart strategy at GT. We don’t have the $$ to be successful there
2. I’m not sure the media loves him. If he has a bad year, or makes a personal mistake there are people that will pound him much harder than a normal coach.
3. I don’t disagree
4. Idk how good or bad he coaches. They have much more talent than anyone they play; that will never be the case here.

If we don't get Deion, then I think most all of us hope for that. Go get a guy, and his staff, who has won at a lower level.

We can't out pay for the best coaches either, so it seems pretty hopeless.

You have to be decent for a few years in a row to sell out guys

I think CDS will be able to get a foot in the door for NIL deals. Folks will want to meet with him based on his name alone. Same for recruits.
Any coach at will draw ire if they are not successful. But initially he will be well received. Just look at the press he is getting on ESPN. He isn't the same Deion as he was as a rookie with the falcons.
His peers seem to think he can coach. We are going to have to take a chance on a somewhat unproven coach. IMO he is a better bet than a Chadwell type of coach,

Chadwell is the kind of guy you get after a good foundation is laid from the crumbling we had

With all these comparisons on future path options, it would be wise not to lose sight of the now established facts, demonstrated multiple times across a variety of areas (ie all of them) that Collins is legitimately a terrible football coach and an awful leader. He has the worst possible traits for either of those positions on any level. He has literally no redeeming qualities and in the end brings absolutely nothing to the table. As it has turned out he has proven to be a net loss across every front. So using NIL, coaching style etc as a comparator on a potential Deion hire is fundamentally flawed if Collins is any part of that discussion.

This would be akin to comparing your upcoming next meal to what's left behind in a fine Japanese toilet after a rough bout with a Japanese Mexican restaurant if only they had those.

You eat out of a Japanese toilet?

I don't follow. Comparisons don't mean the two are equivalent. For example on NIL, Collins was minimal while Deion is speculated to be significant. On coaching style the two are different as well.

Nobody we hire won't be compared to the current coach. That doesn't invalidate the point being made as fundamentally flawed.

What I mean is that saying something akin to "we need a hard nosed traditional coach, do a 180, because the type of stuff that Collins was trying didn't work." is not the right way to look at it because of how much of a failure the Collins tenure has turned out to be, which is all because of him the person and the coach, not the methodologies he tried (and utterly failed) to implement.

I agree Deion is high risk but he has the biggest/fastest reward. Unless we give him a 7 year contract with huge buy out, we really don't have much to lose. Worst case is we are no better in two years than we are now. I'm willing to risk the next 2-3 years to see what he can do.

I’m looking at how all of Collins’ bullshit pissed us off regardless of W/L. It’s been a 3+ year clown show with Twitter handles, lifting weights on the sidelines, uniform insanity, fixations on stuff like a light tunnel and DJ, and Collins apparently spending his time designing custom t shirts to wear to practice. I don’t want any more of that stuff where we can point and say why TF is the coach paying attention to that when special teams can’t keep punts from being blocked. I just want to play competitive football.
