Other than the actual game…

I came to Tech from Florida. In the late 70s when Tech sucked pretty bad. I had been watching college football since I was seven years old. My first live game was the Orange Bowl with Pepper Rodgers coaching John Riggins and Kansas against Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions.

I had allegiances. My uncle had played at Oklahoma State. My cousin played for the Volunteers. I was a fan of Tennessee and Florida.

But I went to all the games and became a lifelong Jackets fan. Tech over EVERYONE. That's my ööööing alma mater!

If you come to Tech from China or Korea, like so many these days, or just don't like American football for whatevcer reason . . . well, IIWII.

But if you go to Tech for four years, get your degree, and then root for some other school's team . . . I don't care, I have zero respect for you. öööö you and the horse you rode in on.

I'm glad your son is at Tech, and I'm sure you're proud. But he has ööööty taste in "buddies."
No, I get it. Your thinking is the exact same as mine. I’ve even said that to his friends. But you gotta realize young folks weren’t brought up like us. My son lives and breathes GT because he came off home from the hospital in a GT onesie, but his buddies who grew up out of state rooting for Michigan, Penn St, Bama, etc aren’t going to throw away their childhood and family because GT accepted them. Sure, winning is a huge part but a bigger part is that 4 or 5 years is a drop in the bucket compared to an entire life and most of these out of state folks are going to do exactly like most in state kids will do which is eventually settle near family, ie back home. Us folks on message boards are the weird outliers because that is our passion. But our half empty stadium and empty coffers are proof our business model is not working for athletics. My personal belief is that the administration is absolutely fine with this arrangement no matter what words any of them use to pacify us. The proof is in the results. If our Admin truly cared they would be frantically working on fixing the financial problem. But they aren’t because they are hired guns and none of them will be here when you and me are sitting in the stadium watching UGA beat us for the 20th time in a row.

So if the football team was successful and all of the SA’s had a choice if they wanted the education but they had to play ball. I’m guessing if we were successful in football they wouldn’t mind?
My last two years we won one or two games. Alabama being one. Still had fans, still recruited well.

The decision to become an international school is a KEY factor here, and it enabled the cesspool to add an engineering program they were not previously allowed to have. With less Georgia, in fact US in general, students, students who could have gotten in easily 20 years ago are now faced with going somewhere else, and that leads to less Georgia kids coming to Tech and at least potentially becoming life-long fans. I wish we had more land in the midtown so we could enlarge the campus and increase the student population, hopefully increasing the number of in-state students. That will probably never occur, because there just isn't more land to be had. Another option would be to build a satellite campus, and I wish someone at Tech would look into doing that.

International students represent less than 10% of our campus undergrad population. That's certainly not nothing but I wouldn't call it a key factor since 90+% are still from the US. And it's not like our international enrollment was 0 twenty years ago.

A bigger factor is probably the intense focus on raising academic prestige which has attracted students who aren't as into sports. Especially given our curriculum being mostly STEM.

Well you would lose in most anything. But since you don’t drink bourbon you likely shouldn’t be posting here. We can do anything. Otherwise what are you really offering here?
Because my life does not revolve around alcohol, I am a loser? WOW. I DO drink, but very seldom and never bourbon. Can't stand the stuff. As far as what I am offering, I am only offering my view of things. If you don't like my view, so be it. I really couldn't care less. Go enjoy your bourbon.

I can buy that, but there are defiitely applicants who would have been accepted without question 30 years ago who get turned down regularly now.

It definitely seemed the PA announcer was more favorable to UL - which was obnoxious with the flashing red make some noise when our offense was out.
That was Braves announcer Jim Powell on the mic last night. He's a Dwag, so draw your own conclusions.

Well, in spite of the disappointment of the loss and the fact that in many ways the Benz sucks, it WAS a fun time and a good game
Never been there, but how in the holy öööö can "the Benz suck?" It cost $1.6 billion and its only six years old. How the öööö could they spend $1.6 billion on a stadium which sucks after six years???

For starters, the workers outside don't have a clue about what's going on, and some of them are rude. And the workers inside, though not rude, can't answer any questions. Plus, I would rather see a game in a real football stadium.

Good post.

I will note that I moved back home to SoFla after graduating. Lived in Florida for eight years after Tech. But I still cheered for Tech uber alles. And everyone in my family knew it. And if I had gone to Stanford or Tulane, I would be rooting for them today. Oh, well. I guess I just don't understand any other way. :dunno:

OK. Thanks for the explanation.

Huh? Wut? GT has been expanding in land and in students for years. What's going on now has nothing to do with the size of the student body. As far as I know we are still at least ~65% in state enrollment.

Turns out you can't put up with losing seasons like we have and retain fans. That's it. We are enduring the worst era of GT football in forever. A whole undergrad class came and went without a single winning season. That is brutal. It is not normal.
International or not, I guarantee more students were at dragoncon last night than were at the game. Weirdos
