Other than the actual game…

International or not, I guarantee more students were at dragoncon last night than were at the game. Weirdos
Dragoncon?!?!?

WTF is that? Is that like some kind of cosplay deal for D&D fans? We had those D&D freaks way back when I was at Tech more than 40 years ago. I'd be studying in the dorm's community room at 2 AM so my roommate could sleep in darkness, and these dorks would be sitting around a table pretending they were wizards or warlocks or some other kind of incel. Then, next morning, one of those dorks would be sitting directly in front of me sawing logs in first period calculus, on his way to a nice degree from Georgia State.

Anyway, those folks are nothing new. But we still used to draw a good crowd.

It’s exactly what you think it is, but there’s more of them now.

I guessed pre game attendance would be about 35K.
And was posted early on, seeing those huge empty swathes of seats behind the Cardinals team bench was nothing but a bad look.
I'm ready for the MBS deal to be done The concessions are good but getting there and getting out are no great shakes, though we kinda got lucky this time (good Uber driver there and Mario Andretti IV drove our taxi back. I think that dude ran over half a dozen homeless people getting us back. )
And no, no more "Mayhem at Mercedes Benz." No mayhem or chaos or anything else that carries the stench of clown. Rename, rebrand or redraw the damn contract and let's get back to playing at BDS/HGF.

I walked the campus on Friday after not having done so in many years and the geek factor and international student presence was definitely high. I was with my 14 year old son who asked me if there were autistic students at Tech after he saw a couple of kids walk by.

That said, there is absolutely NO REASON we can't field good football and basketball teams. It's all about creating tradition and marketing buzz. The fans will come. After all, who the f**k is Alabama in football or Kansas in basketball and why the f**k would you want to go to the middle of nowhere to study? These schools do not have a preordained right to be powerhouses. We can can do better.

Huh? Wut? GT has been expanding in land and in students for years. What's going on now has nothing to do with the size of the student body. As far as I know we are still at least ~65% in state enrollment.

Turns out you can't put up with losing seasons like we have and retain fans. That's it. We are enduring the worst era of GT football in forever. A whole undergrad class came and went without a single winning season. That is brutal. It is not normal.
Not to mention students weren’t going to walk or Uber to the game. I walked from the aquarium to the game past at least 4 strung out homeless who were passed out on the street.

IIRC, originally, Tech provided free transportation for students to the game. I don't know if that is actually correct of if it is still done or not.

I wonder how the money breaks down at bds for food. Cheap food is always a really good experience regardless of how much the tickets cost.

None of this is on the fans. The school of Georgia Tech has created this mess. Give people hope and they’ll come but it has to be sustained hope and not just the gimmick hope. When GT decided to become an international school and relegate sports that is when we lost half the students and the local fan. Bottom line is we are lucky to still have 30,000 loyal fans after the past 4 years. But that number will continue to decline with each passing meaningless season.

As much as I hate to admit you’re right…..you’re right. We care way more about national and international prestige than service to the State of Georgia. It’s good for me as a graduate, not so much for the program going forward.

I had a great time at MBS. I’d really like:

1) the football team to actually be good
2) keep our normal home games at BDS and add one trip to MBS against a quality team every year to start the season.

Hopefully your son will go to med school since he apparently can diagnose autism by sight

Student allotment for the Benz was sold out.

Somebody failed at getting more tickets then. I have a hard time believing there are students that didn't get to go because the allotment was sold out. But not so surprising since often BDS student allotment is sold out and half of them don't show.

Tech marketing for this game was awful - you better buy season tickets or you may not get to see the opener in Mercedes-Benz. First of all, that was an idle threat. They should have tried to sell as many single game tickets as possible.

True, but they totally mismanaged the number and a horribly empty looking stadium was the result. Many, many students tried to get student tickets and received the email that the allotment was already sold out. Where was Cabrera or JBatt regarding that? See, this is the BS that happens at GT all the time. With my son being there I see it up close now. I can’t wait until he graduates so I can go back into my shell believing GT is competent like I was during the 28 years in between me and him being there. Seriously, how hard would it have been for JBatt to make a call and get more student tickets released if their words are to be believed? A lot of students tried to get student tickets and couldn’t. Sure, could they have gone the stub hub route? Of course, but as we’ve discussed most of them don’t really care so aren’t going to do that. GT is its own worse enemy and I haven’t seen anyone willing to take it on. JBatt is a good dude but he’s simply building his resume until an SEC opening comes his way.

I disagree about Batt. He well may be building his resume, but I bet he has eyes for something bigger than the SEC

That any student wanted to be in that stadium Friday night and was told they could not attend because the allotment was sold out is absolutely ridiculous. The management of our AA when it comes to fan relations, ticket sales, marketing, maximizing student interest, and enhancing experiences for fans is really second rate.
