Patenaude resigns at ODU

I may be alone but I didn’t Pat was that bad.

I don’t want him back but I thought he was better than a lot of people given what we had.

Look at our opening drive vs NC ST. Look at the play he called vs Clemson that would have won the game if we ran it right. Look at our last two plays vs Duke last year.

He wasn’t the best in the business but I never agreed that he was not a good OC.

The NC St game where the announcer was diagnosing our plays pre-snap?

It’s possible. A less likely opinion would be that our talent had been capable of doing better, and what we found were flashes of talent. Not many though.

I figured Tech would keep him and replace Thacker after the last two seasons. Weird.

The opening drive where we went 80 yards for a TD in like 4 plays.
Against a NC State defense that was missing its top 6-8 top DBs from the start of the season.
(that drive was 70 yards in three plays, IIRC)

vs Notre Dame:
3rd & 5 near midfield: Time-out. Gibbs on sidelines
3rd & 5, coming out of the TO: False start. Gibbs on sidelines
3rrd & 10 - dumbass play resulting in 4th down.

P-nut sucked.

Most playcallers can script some pretty good opening drives. Having a feel for the game as it's happening and adjusting accordingly is more difficult, and that's not an area where I'd say he excelled. There are far worse OCs out there, but I don't think he ever came close to maximizing the skill sets of our best players.

That’s my take on CDP. He can coach, and he can draw up plays. But he can’t disguise the plays very well. He isn’t a P5 OC. He’s close, but not quite there. The Fridge ran about 3 plays out of 1 formation and had 3 or so formations that we would line up in, then shift. That told the QB the defense pre-snap. CPJ ran about 6 plays out of the same formation. There were some tweaks on blocking too. That is the step CDP needs to take, disguising the play call. It isn’t easy when Clemson has 5 guys watching ever call you have made for the last 5 years.

It reminds me of a ATM friend. They had an OC where you could tell run/pass based on the LG foot position. The OC didn’t realize it, but the Big12 DCs did. Literally, DE’s looking at the guys feet post snap. That is the difference P5 and G5.
