Paul Johnson reveals starting lineup for Georgia Tech

Saw this story from earlier in the summer regarding Malik Rivera.

"Rivera, from St. Johns, Fla., played in 28 games and started 17 in three seasons with the Terriers. Last season, he ranked third on the team in tackles, with 73, and had four pass breakups. His position coach for the past two seasons was Shiel Wood, now the safeties coach at Tech.

Rivera was a triple major at Wofford in mathematics, finance and computer science. He will pursue a master’s in quantitative and computational finance."

Nice! Dude is a frikkin financial analyst genius like @Akinji07.

As much as people may crap on the talent level, this makes me happy about our program. The fact that a kid wants to come to our school and get rewarded with a great advanced degree while playing sports is awesome. We need more kids like this in the world in general.

And, apparently, he is not Chinese.

Can't wait to see the girls he won't take home to mom.

agreed - am curious to see what Woody does with Div-1 talent. Roof was a better recruiter than coach.
TBH I think Woody and co. will end up determining Paul Johnson's legacy at Georgia Tech.

If they can field even a top 30 or 40 defense, we immediately become a top 25 program because we know what we get from the offense. If they can manage better than that, the sky is the limit.

OTOH, if we get more of the same, CPJ probably goes down with the ship with some real high points on his resume blemished by the frustrating lows and bouts of mediocrity.

Based on early reports and recent recruiting, I'm optimistic. Can't wait to see it on the field, though!

Biggest news here, to me, remains that Bruce Jordan-Swilling ain't starting. Either Curry's really made progress or BJS hasn't, cuz I think everyone thought he was going to round into a three-year starter for us.

Also noteworthy that Jerry Howard has moved from second-string to third-string. Always exciting when a young guy can push his way up the charts, beyond his seniority expectation, especially as I thought Howard looked pretty good in the limited action he got last year. (Or – oh, no – is this one of those situations where our more dynamic runners are good enough blockers to start?)

On the radio show, CPJ said Howard missed some practices due to an injury, and that created an opportunity for Jordan Mason to move ahead of him.

Thank you. I forgot about the radio show. I'll find the link.

I also noticed that the defense overall is pretty light as well. I guess this year we just have a light yet talented team.

We only have one big ugly up front and that’s not going to bold well when we go up against bigger O-Lines. I have no doubt that Woody’s defensive scheme is going to rely on quick penetration and disruption, but we’re really going to have to get in the backfield often otherwise we’re going to get worn down fast. If his system works anything like Tenuta’s, it should help. We were also pretty light with Tenuta’s defenses.

Is it just me, or is this beginning to look like what I always thought depth would look like if GT ever got any depth?
Yep, the talent depth is there, let’s just hope that CPJ and Coach Woody put the guys in the best position to succeed. We don’t have size this year but if the offensive and defensive schemes are on-point, we should be able to rotate and not miss much of a beat.

That was shocking to me as well, but Curry has had rave reviews all Spring and Summer. Remember, he was hurt all last season or he may have even started last year. Swilling is obviously talented, so if Curry and maybe even Quez Jackson have beaten him out, that says a lot about the talent we have at that position.

I see pockets of depth at running back and linebacker. But not anywhere else:
- secondary has no starters from last year
- WR are very unproven or didn't produce much last year
- OL is very light, but experienced. Experience is secondary to physical superiority though. Pass protection is going to be tough...again.
- DL (see OL). Not good with only 3 lineman though from a weight standpoint. They are going to get really tired if they stay on the field long.
- QB is thin behind TM with almost no experience.

I remain hopefully optimistic. If Marshall goes down, it's going to be a very long year. I hope he learned how to pitch the ball in the offseason.

Our defense sucked last year, so this isn't entirely a bad thing outside of losing Gray. Plus the new guys are probably the most physically talented players on the team.
- WR are very unproven or didn't produce much last year
This is my #1 worry. In 2009 and 2014 we had bona fide #1 WRs who would win 1v1 matchups. Not sure we have that now, unless somebody really breaks out.

If Cooper and Marshall can get healthy and stay healthy, I'll feel good.

Agree. Hopefully Owens, Glanton, or even Justice Dingle (I've heard he will probably play) can step up and join the rotation.

I'm actually not worried about QB at all. CPJ says Oliver is a great runner and he would feel comfortable with him starting, and James Graham is supposedly the most talented QB we've ever had under CPJ. We've got experience at the top, some reliability at #2, and great long-term potential at #3.

I remain hopefully optimistic. If Marshall goes down, it's going to be a very long year. I hope he learned how to pitch the ball in the offseason.
I added my rose-colored glasses view above.

Losing your starting QB is a long year for probably 99% of all high school, college, and NFL teams.

I expected Andrew Marshall to start at tackle so I hope his being second string is a result of the Quinney kid being that good and not lingering rust due to his injury. Did anyone else expect to see the Defoor kid (must be a distant cousin to me as my great-grandmother was a Defoor from the Calhoun area) in the two deep and pushing for playing time? What is Kenny Cooper's status, will we see him at all this year?

I guess I had Glanton pegged at defensive tackle. Maybe I have slotted him that way due to 4-3 thinking. We are still pretty small across both fronts.

I expect the DB's to be a total adventure this year. Expect a lot of maddening moments and costly mistakes. I just hope they have the athletic ability to give us some upside thrills as well. AJ Gray and Lamont Simmons were the only experience we had back there and with them both out (Simmons at least for now) we lack anyone who logged significant playing time.

That’s true but there are enough counter examples. UGA last year did pretty well behind the back up. Bama obvs won the game behind a back up. And JT5 was promoted due to transfer.

Seven seniors and a R-JR starting on defense. If the new defense is effective, we might be pretty good. Hopefully they will be playing against lots of Fr and Sophs on the other teams.
