Permanent ACC foes

You don’t like the Va Tech games?

No, they don’t really resonate with me. The games were good when VT was good, but that’s it. Without Beamer, they are just another team with a decent following, basically the Virginia version of NC State.

UVa, on the other hand, has a special place in OUR tradition so the game is more interesting to me.

Then there is the fanbase. VT and NCSt bring trash fans. But they aren’t so trashy as to make it interesting (like Miami). UVa, FSU, and Clemson fans are always pleasant.

Seems like everyone here is forgetting which conference we are in. Three permanent rivals means...

Duke-UNC-Wake-NC State play each other every year. Everyone else...whatever.

GT -----> Clemson, F$U & VPISU.

This just makes me more pissed with our AD when Maryland left. We should have moved into that spot. It would have put Clemson and uGa on opposite years. We would have been in the division with our two closest ACC schools (and biggest draws Clem/FSU). And our permanent crossover would have been Uva while Clemson would have picked up UL. UL would have been in the same division as their two closest ACC schools (pitt/vt).

In that case then Clemson, FSU, Miami, and GT. Call it the Southern Division.

We should have moved to the BIG 10 instead of or with Maryland. We would be in a much better place financially and we could afford decent coaches and a decent AD.

What does it say about the state of the GT football program that a sizeable percentage of this board has put Duke on some sort of pedestal. I don't give two hoots about the Duke football series. Now that Cutcliff & Johnson are both gone, that game will struggle to move beyond the Bally Sports Network. If that was the Thursday Night Game, sports bars across the country would switch to Wheel-of-Fortune.

You’ll find tradition is a large part of the college football’s appeal. It doesn’t matter if it appeals to the college football fanbase in general. The GT-Duke series had nothing to do with Johnson or Cutcliff or Roof or Spurrier. It is a tradition on its own. I wouldn’t mind it being interrupted a bit, but I wouldn’t want it to go away.

This. Picking schools in North Carolina is not realistic. Their permanent opponents will be each other.

Clemson, FSU, Doesn't matter.

3 x 4 = 12. How does this work with 14 teams?

Not sure what you are talking about

Each team has three permanent opponents, but they aren’t the same so no pods
That leaves 10 teams
You play 5 of them for two years
You play the other five the next two years

That gives you 8 conference games a year and you play every team home and away every 4 years

Potential permanent opponents?
Boston College — Miami, Syracuse, Virginia Tech
Clemson — NC State, Georgia Tech, Florida State
Duke — North Carolina, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech
Florida State — Miami, Clemson, Syracuse
Georgia Tech — Clemson, Duke, Louisville
Louisville — Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech
Miami — Florida State, Boston College, Pittsburgh
North Carolina — Duke, NC State, Virginia
NC State — Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina
Pittsburgh — Louisville, Miami, Syracuse
Syracuse — Boston College, Florida State, Pittsburgh
Virginia — Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Wake Forest

Wake Forest — Duke, NC State, Virginia

I really don’t want to play Louisville every year. The trip is kind of lame for road games, and there’s really nothing “there” between the two teams. This seems like an effort to shoehorn in “unnatural rivalries” because nobody really cares about the latecomers to the conference.

It’s silly that we don’t play FSU every year given the geographic proximity.

The benefit to this type of scheduling is that, since you rotate teams so often, there's no real imbalance long term in the schedule. Since you'll be playing every team every other year anyway, it doesn't really matter that much who your permanent rivals are.

What the öööö is wrong with the acc? GT/FSU is always well attended at both sights (we are the closest acc school to fsu). Link Cuse/Louisville and GT/FSU.

Agree. We are probably the closest school to Louisville too, no?

I’d be fine with Clemson Lou FSU; that may even be better than Duke.

Getting FSU seems like a no brainer. Why the hell would you send a team from Florida to upstate New York?

We are roughly the same distance as Pitt and VT from UL. I imagine VT is the closest, but not the fastest..

True - I didn’t map it, but know it’s a pretty straight shot up to Louisville.

As long as we were paired with Clem/FSU I am indifferent on the third game. Send us to Syracuse for all I care.

Absolutely. Give us those two and we will start selling tickets again.
