Pining for Tenuta

Most of the conversation (pointless IMO) about what Tenuta would or wouldn't have done neglects a basic fact. Tenuta didn't want to be here.

Tenuta wanted to be head coach but he did not want to stay as DC. His choice.

Now, I was a Tenuta defender when he was here. There are too many folks here with simple answers to problems, "All you gotta do is..." It seems to never occur to those people that we have to work with the talent available and scheme to cover weakness in one area with strength in another.

So, Tenuta had a philosophy that he would rather die a quick death than allow an offense to stay on the field. Others prefer to play defense "defensively" and wait for the offense to make mistakes. Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses.

So, I think we would do okay with Tenuta, but he wouldn't be the magic answer to defensive problems either. But since he ain't coming back, it is pointless to keep bringing him up.

Tenuta, like Friedgen, left by his own choice. I appreciate the contributions they made while at GT. But their performance elsewhere since leaving doesn't indicate that having them around would be a magic answer to our problems.

Let's stop the comparisons and stick to dealing with the present.

Kyle, your god Tenuta, just gave up 38 points to an underdog, unranked Michigan team with a freshman QB. Give it a rest.

By the way, how is the great Tenuta doing today?

I'll answer my own question. He needs to make some serious adjustments at half time if he plans on slowing down Michigan State today.

Since Wommack probably won't be back, who should we go after for DC? Do you guys think we go for a veteran, an up and coming position coach, NFL or promote from within? And will this coordinator be a recruiter, a genius schemer or a motivator?

I hope we get a young guy that can get us playing MEAN!!!

Tenuta isn't coming back, so any discussion of that subject is irrelevant. However, the basis of lonestarjacket's post is false. It takes two to tango, and PJ did not want Tenuta here. It was not a fit.

I disagree with Wommack's philosophy on defense. My opinion is not based solely on some emotional reaction to the last two games, and my posts on this board going back to July prove that.

We need a new DC, but that need has nothing to do with Tenuta, and everything to do with Wommack. PJ will make the change at the appropriate time.

I admire Tenuta's abilities however his attitude made me happy to see the door hit him in the ass on the way out.

Kyle is so right, we really need Tenuta back
giving up 30 (should have been 37) to Michigan State is just awesome and we really need that
we all know that MSU is much better offensively than the Miami Hurricanes, clearly

man, i wish we still had Tenuta. Kyle is so right

I don't really care one way or another about Tenuta; he was a good DC when he was here...much better than people would now have you believe.

Wommack has to go, though.

I agree. How to deal with the present:

Wommack needs to fix the problem or go after this season.

Why are we talking about dumping Wommack 16 games into his tenure at Tech

We were loving him for the most part of the year last season and now we want him gone? Even considering the HUGE loss we took on the DL

I think we need to loosen up and let them work it out

It's way to early to be calling for someone's help

PS....your grammar isn't all that either slick LOL

Well he wasn't extraordinarily impressive last year and his defense has given up 30 ppg and over 400 yards per game against FBS teams. Is that reason to fire him 3 weeks into the season? Hell no. If those numbers stay that way or get worse by then end of game 12 then we have to consider that possibility.

One thing I never really did like about Tenuta was his refusal to recruit, or learn how to recruit. It's something longstanding, going back to his time with Mack Brown at UNC. He was the de facto head coach for defense and wouldn't get involved with something arguably more important than any other single function, recruiting.

As for Wommack, we'll see I guess. We did pretty well the first half against Clemson IMO, but six straight punts and a number of three and outs eventually caught up to them. And maybe Miami really is back and they'll torch the rest of the teams on their schedules without Nix.

Not that I'm saying these things are incontrovertible fact, just that we should wait and see. UNC has not looked like world-stoppers on offense and how our defense does against them should say a lot.
