Place Kicker - WTH was Collins Thinking????

Going into this season, Jude Kelley was 1 of 6 on FGs for his career with a career long of 32 yards and then went 2 of 6 this season before being replaced. 3 of 12 for his 2+ year career....

Gavin Stewart hit more FGs in ONE GAME than Jude Kelley had for his entire career and did so in what is statistically speaking one of the most difficult NFL stadiums to kick in. Stewart is now 6 of 7 on FGs for his career with the one miss being from over 50 yards.

I realize this is a small sample size, but are we really supposed to believe that Kelley was beating out Stewart in practice????
It’s probably something completely retarded like Kelley was better at executing fakes or some such öööö.

Definitely something other than ability to kick the football between the uprights.

Great post GTS. We will see if Gavin can keep it up but it does lead one to argue the coaches aren’t always right regardless of what they see in practice. Still believe Collins ruined Wesley Wells.
Wesley Wells was the last guy to kick 4 FGs in a game for Tech (UVA 2018), before that was Butker (Kentucky 2016), then Scott Blair (ACCCG 2009). Those three plus Stewart make up 4 of the 9 kickers to do that in Tech history.

Of those listed, Stewart kicked in the worst conditions, IMO.

It makes you wonder how many games we could've won with a competent kicker? So many games we were deflated because we would decide to kick the FG instead of going for 4th and short and then miss the damn FG. Total deflate of the team.

Or we would punt from long FG range on 4th and long.

Or we would go for a low risk 4th down because we had no faith in the kicker

idiocy all around because we couldn’t get the right guy in there.

The only GOOD reason would be that Kelley was making EVERYTHING in practice and Stewart was not.

or

Stewart was injured this whole time.

With 34 more made field goals Collins could have beaten Georgia and Notre Dame to end the 2021 season

He didn't go with King over Wells.. Wells go the yips and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

I thought he didn’t get the yips until after he was benched and brought back in when the other guy had missed a bunch. Now maybe that already started in practice before the first game, but I remember feeling pretty indignant that Wells didn’t start the season for us after how solid he played the previous year. His kicks were never pretty, but they were good until he got benched (in games at least).

Besides the kickers--
There have been many questionable player decisions over the last 3 yrs---DUH. One that jumped out to me was not starting Charlie Thomas 2 yrs (I think) ago soon after he was DEF Player of the Week.Gee, I guess he made other players look bad or what.

So I think he had this obsession with being loyal to players. Even if it was detrimental to the team.
