Let me posit a guess that Gef had someone who was an expert in high level, elite kicking and they got involved in something Wells was doing and gave him the yips. Either that or it was some psychological idiocy like above the line and King got first try because his name comes first in the alphabet.

Wells started the year off as our PK. He kicked both XPs against Clemson in the opener in 2019. He got the yips in practice and couldn't hit anything. Next game, King did the kicking because of it. King missed a 51 yard FG that he would have been kicking either way because Wells didn't have the leg for the long FGs - King was the long range PK. Citadel game he brought Wells back in to try and he missed his first XP try so he was benched again for King. King kicked from that point through the Pitt game and was 10/10 on XP and 3/5 on FG with misses of 46 yd (Citadel) and 34 yd (Pitt). IIRC, King pulled something and was out the next 2 games (Virginia and VT). Wells was 4/4 XP against UVA but again missed a 30 yd FG. We did not have a FG or XP attempt against VT. King was back for NC State where he was 4/4 on XP (no FG attempts), and 1/1 XP against UGAg and 0/1 on FG. I know the story behind that one also, and that is one you can 100% pin on CGC.
