Post game thoughts/observations

- Really missed Leonard and Edwards tonight. Leonard would be starting over Benson and Benson missed the block on the interception to open the game. Nate had his man beat, that was a TD if Sims doesn't get hit as hes throwing. Benson also whiffed the block on the 1st blocked punt, then later dropped a pass that hit his hands that would've been 1st down. Edwards would've started at NB over Bennett and Wallace. They both got beat a few times.

- Special teams (punt team) need work. The 1st Fg miss wasnt bad, it was a 50 yarder with plenty of leg just a little wide. The blocked punts were unacceptable.

- Clock management was horrible. I was hoping we had made improvements here. Doesn't appear so.

- OL still needs work. Maybe they will gel as the season progresses but there were several facepalm moments. Some are understandable as we are young there and facing one of the best DL in cfb, but all the false starts have to be fixed. When they were able to give Jeff a decent pocket, good things happened.

- Sims can be great. I only saw a couple bad throws that were on him. He was getting hit a lot still. I would have liked to see him take off a little earlier sometimes. He stuck in a little too long a few times with room to run and got hit when he was throwing when he likely couldve picked up a chunk with his legs.

- We really missed Thomas after he got ejected. Defense started to crumble after that.

- Clemson had some luck, not that they needed it, but it definitely helped some. We came out in 2nd half and hold them 3 and out, then score a TD to cut the lead to 4, then appear to hold them 3 and out again but they get bailed out by DPI on an uncatchable ball out of bounds, not to mention the missed false start on that same play. Still held them to a FG there. Next possession they have it we have DJU dead to rights on 3rd down and he makes the circus play to Shipley because he just happened to be back there because he got knocked down by our pass rush. Finish that play and we're getting the ball back again late 3rd down 7.

I think if I had told any of you before the game we would be within 4 early 3rd qtr, down 7 late 3rd qtr, or down 14 with the ball to start the 4th you would have called me a liar. No national analysts surely thought so. They all expected a bloodbath from start to finish with zero chance of us being competitive.
I saw some improvements

1, Sims played well
2. Play calling on offense vastly improved
3. Defensive line for much of the game was strong
4. Receivers are better - couple of times fell down like 4th down run and Carter but they are better

Bad
1. Punt blocking omg
2. Coach and his timeouts
3. OL - missed blocks and illegal motions - you didn't see Clemson oline jumping offsides
This was not the game to judge them on - I think Chip Long could be our next head coach.

Forget about the good and bad. The problem we need to fix here is the coach is coaching scared. He doesn’t trust his players. The Georgia game last year, this game at the end of the half, running the ball three straight times in the fourth qtr.

He is playing to avoid a disaster and in the process has created a disaster.

I’m not sure I could play for this coach who sends all of the wrong messages to his players

I've never seen a coach so thoroughly ridiculed by the announcers and the opposing coach during a game.
I was at the game, but curious how bad they were ragging us. I still remember the rambling wrecked graphic and since then it's just continued to get worse. The great thing was 0 money downs last night.

What happened to the quick hitting offensive plays? Sims needs to get the ball out of his hands quicker or pull it down and run it. He should almost be running it as much as he throws.

The D looked good early but just gave up in the 4Q.

I saw a money down on the broadcast.
Ugh. I think because it was MBS not a home game they didn't do it on the PA. I was hoping it was dead for good, I did get a good "Wanker" chant going in my section (all the Ted Lasso fans).

Sims played well but he also threw an INT in the red zone that would have taken away our only TD.

My biggest issue is that in theory if we clean up the mistakes I do think this is a 5+ win team. I just don't believe we will do that. The penalties, turnovers, bizarre special teams, horrendous in game clock management isn't going to suddenly be fixed.

Having to play perfect football to win 5 games isn't a winning strategy, but that's where we are.

Yep which is why I do not believe we reach our projected win total of 3.5. We have the talent but this is not a team that puts itself in positions to win games. This is a team that does everything it can to lose games. Honestly I would prefer to watch a team with less talent but very well coached. It's almost more frustrating seeing us outplay clemson for almost 30min only to lose by 30+

This is year 4 for CGC. I’ve given him a pass for 3 years, but no more. I saw the same positives/negatives that most everyone else did. But what I saw out of the HC is inexcusable. He cannot manage game situations, and, save for going for a 4th down in his own territory, coaches scared.

What I am about to say is not meant to be advocating for a return to the 3O, but who would you rather have leading your football program, Collins or Johnson … or Gailey for that matter. Collins has to go, he just has to.

I would be fully on board with penning an apology letter to Gailey and having him come back with a HCIW candidate to mentor. He knows how to run practices, so he could take this team to 7 wins with their talent level.

We lost by 31 to a highly ranked team that wasn't overly concerned about attacking us or scheming against us. They were repping plays to see where DJ U was at. We never did anything to pose a threat. Not much else to judge from it. I think Clemson is good under DJ U, but if they want to reach their ceiling, the other guy should get the reps.

Sims was ripping it and still put at least two up for grabs - not counting the deep ball INT. However, I feel like if Clemson had really been scheming they'd lurk a linebacker and get an easy INT.

Pass rush seemed improved, but could have just been Clemson's inexperienced RT.

This is why no one can truly be optimistic about the future of the program. No reason to believe hes going to suddenly become even an average gameday coach, when these issues have been glaring for 3+ years now and no corrections are made, in fact one could argue hes actually getting worse.

Sucks, really, because i thought there were a lot of positives to take away from the game last night.

Supposedly Collins had the support of O'Leary and Friedgen when he came in. I would think they have to be reconsidering that support after the embarrassment last night. It is obvious the team is better than the coach.

Having the head coach ridiculed on national TV cannot be good for our recruiting.

I disagree. Again, need to give Clemson credit for their defensive talent relative to the rest of our opponents. Mistakes against the other teams won’t be as impactful as they were against Clemson. Pre-snap penalties and better punt blocking are easy to fix relative to other types of mistakes.

They're still full of hubris and quite influential.

Does anyone remember our game against Clemson last year? Everyone seems to forget our D looked good against them then too. It was the same reason as last year: DJU is a bad quarterback and their offensive line sucks. Once we went up against competent QB’s and decent O-lines, we got demolished. There were plenty of plays for Clemson, both this year and last year, that they had guys wide open that DJU just didn’t see.

If you’re looking at this game and thinking that our D has maybe turned a corner, you might want to rethink that here in a month.

**I’m hoping that it actually is progress but Geoff hasn’t burned us many times before**
