This was our first visit to MBS, so we didn't have a clue what to expect.
Stopped in at JR Crickets for lunch. Actually not too bad, but still a dive.
Popped in at Bookstore. Highly disappointed at the amount of navy. I don't mind the navy all that much, but I only wanted to pick up a gold "gameday" polo. There was some "Oxford" brand (whose gold was actually not bad and saw several fans in it later), but no Adidas version to be found. Anyway, my kid got a hat and we got a couple of decals.
Stayed at Embassy Suites across from CFBHOF. The place was ~90/10 Clemson/Tech fans as was the sidewalk up and down Marietta Street. Their Alumni tailgate was right down the street at Stats Brewpub. Anyway, this had us worried early.
Walked over early to check out the festivities outside the stadium. Started at the Tailgate Town. Lots of stuff for people to do, but figured there'd be more food trucks, etc. Saw the ReqTeq booth and, unless I missed something, saw only coozies with Clemson colors for distribution. Really hope I saw that incorrectly as their banner seemed balanced. Anyway, I am sure many of those guys are UGA fans. Many on this "side" of the stadium were Clemson fans, and we found out why shortly after.
Tried to go see some ST folks and see the team walk in, but we would have had to walk around the entire stadium or go back around up some streets (or so it seemed). Went down the escalator to try and get over to where it appeared there were mostly Tech folks tailgating. They had barricades set up for both teams to walk in, but we were on the Clemson side. It was close enough to each team arriving that I guess we just did not get over there early enough. Or, maybe since it was our first time there, we didn't execute the route properly.
Started to rain a bit as they opened the doors so we went on in and found our seats. Given our propensity to usually tailgate right up until gametime, this was the earliest I've been seated in YEARS.
We were in upper portion of 103 (endzone corner opposite Clemson band) amongst mostly Tech fans. There were a few Clemson fans scattered in there, but they owned the lower portion of that endzone. Had zero issues w fans. Never made the big board that I know of.
Food wasn't bad. Beer was cold. Kid got an order of Totchos from a Fox Bros booth. We hit up Fresh Mex for a wrap and some tacos.
I was really relieved to see/hear the number of Tech fans as it got closer to game time and throughout the game.
Sound is weird in there as you mention. We could barely hear the band at times.
All in all, for what I thought was supposed to be a home game for us, the production seemed very even. My expectation/understanding (home game) might very well be wrong. The only thing I noticed in our favor was the horn when we scored.
Curious what the game experience was like for folks (other than the game itself).
We parked in the CNN Deck ($30, and only like half full). Not a bad walk, although it put us at the wrong end of the stadium from our seats.
Our seats were crap. Corner of the end zone by the band, about 6 rows off the field. Couldn’t see anything. Pretty weak.
There were a fair number of Clemson fans in my section - obviously a bunch of season ticket holders sold their tickets to those yahoos. Thanks a lot, that helps with the atmosphere…
The student section, at least, was very vocal. But the stadium seems to both swallow crowd noise AND be ear-ringingly loud at all times.
I thought there was a decent crowd all around, minus some empty seats in the neutral seats around the 50s. Couldn’t get a good look at the Tech section to see how many we brought.
The A/V production seemed pretty even, maybe slanted a little toward us?
Was that Derrick Moore doing the game intro (not specific to one team or the other) on the PA/video board?
I still miss our old band PA guy. He sounded like a manic muppet, but had personality. The current guy just sounds like a nerd yelling.
The band needs to learn more songs for the stands. Seems like they played the same stuff a lot. Never got a full 3 verses of “Ramblin’ Wreck,” either, even after the TD. I was not well pleased with that. But we did do Budweiser at the right time, so that’s something.
Going back to the 90s, I’ve defended Clemson as being a friendly rival and nice fanbase. Success seems to be going to their heads, though - they’ve forgotten that they used to be a joke or an afterthought and probably will be again eventually. But at the same time, they think they’re some kind of poor, underfunded underdog. It’s weird. And after the RUTS at BDS a couple of years ago and the blatant kicking of a defeated opponent last night, I’m done with Dabo and Clemson. It’s like how the Red Sox used to be the good guys beating the Yankees, and then they became the Yankees. öööö Clemson, I hope they lose every game.
