The improvement from the Mercer to the Vandy game was significantly greater than the improvement from the BC to the Mercer game. I thought the first three possessions of the game Tech started to run their base offense with more efficiency than we've seen in a good long while, but it tailed off as the game went along. They have to be able to be efficient in their base offense, especially on first and second downs, if they want to beat teams like Clemson and Miami because it allows them to control the clock and shorten the game and trim the number of possessions their offenses get. It got glossed over by some of the big plays on third and long, but they still need to kick it up a few gears in that department if they want to be a really good team. Perimeter blocking, in particular, needs to get more consistent. They can't keep getting into long yardage situations and expect Thomas to pull a rabbit out of his hat every time now that the schedule is about to get harder.
Brilliant call for Johnson to play action off the toss play after starting the previous two games heavy on toss plays. Loved the call (kind of expected it against Mercer considering Tech started their first 3 possessions against BC with tosses), although I also kind of wish he had saved it for Clemson.
Dedrick Mills is a tough hombre. He runs angry and seems to do a very good job of picking up a couple of extra yards after contact. If he keeps working hard to get better, he's going to grow into an absolute beast in a couple of years and potentially break a few Tech rushing records along the way. He and Marshall are going to have to two of the baddest men on the field Thursday night if Tech's going to beat Clemson.
I've been pretty pleased with the run defense adjustments. BC and Vandy both try to play a pretty physical style, and Tech didn't embarrass themselves in run defense in either game. Struggled a little early in run defense in both games, maybe, but made good adjustments in both games. Tech's done a good job against the run and getting into third and longs in the first three games, which leads to the next point...
The pass rush is dreadful. Every once in a while Simmons or one of the other linemen might have a good individual effort, but as a group they just don't get anything consistently and with Roof playing that soft zone behind them, if they don't get push, Tech's giving up 10-20 yard chunks every time against a competent offense. I expected a guy like Keshun Freeman to be further along as a pass rusher by this point in his development. If this keeps up, Roof's going to have to blitz more, which carries the threat of giving up more explosive plays against. If they had gotten any kind of consistent pass rush against Vandy, they would've gotten picks in bunches because Vandy's QB is garbage and on the spare times Tech did put pressure on him he got very inaccurate.
