Louisville QB played like ass. We scored 28 pts in one quarter. They didn't convert a 3rd down until the 4Q.

Those are things you should say about a blowout win, not a loss. Our players on offense have to stop looking for the homerun on every touch and instead get up field aggressively, take what's there on the play, and come back to the huddle. I'm so sick and tired of watching our guys go backwards from the point of contact on both sides of the ball. It isn't a size issue, we just don't initiate contact well on offense or defense and haven't for a long damn time. It's öööö football and it causes us to lose games we have the talent to win because it's a 2 ypp swing on both sides of the ball whether you're falling forwards or backwards. You have to want to hit someone in this sport.

In the 2Q, the guys didn't play like pussies. That was fun, I would pay to watch a team like that. I HATE watching the pussyfooted dancing in the hole and letting the play come to us on defense. I can take pride in losing if the team plays hard, but I don't think they did for 3 quarters yesterday.

On the point of avoiding contact, who I thought was our RB1 was really bad about it. So much so that I think he may have lost his starting job.

Was at the game and watched the replay late to confirm in person game observations.

1. our OL has quality depth issues. After Williams and Robinson went out with injuries, our pass protection and running lanes suffered.

2. After losing Brooks and Sims after the first half, our secondary imploded. The 2ndary was supposed to be our strong suit.

3. The offense can score with the first team intact. We aren’t lacking in skilled position firepower thanks to SEC transfers.

4. King is solid but he took some hits. We’ll need the other QBs before it’s all said and done this season.

5. Departure of K White on the DL really shows. His impact made our defensive front better and to pressure the QB consistently.

6. No C Thomas/Eley showed in run stop defense. Tatum will be a good one in time.

7.Kicking is still an issue in clutch situations.

8.Buster knows what he’s doing but there is serious drop off in OL depth in terms of pass coverage and interior run game.

9. Louisville had quality DL/OL. Probably one the top opponents we’ll face this year. They were very successful in the portal. They’ll be successful in their rebuild.

10. we can score points when everyone is healthy offensively.

11. we’re going to have to score over 35 points a game to stay in games unfortunately.

12. TEs are finally being used!

14. We did beat the spread.

Louisville’s Oline and Dline were both better. It’s gonna be a long season as expected.

that’s why the games are played. We need 4* quality not just at the skilled positions but along the LOS, offensively and defensively.

We have way below average talent (except for the secondary) but above average coaching. I could definitely see some of the UGag offensive schemes being attempted, and say what you want, that will pay off if we can upgrade the talent level. The Gators, who are melting down because of their staff, would be a top 10 team if they had ours.

no

We put up 488 yards offense on 23 first downs. Louisville made adjustments and we couldn’t counter effectively. Our OL seemed to tire and then our D folded. Arm tackling means you aren’t there with the body. That often indicates fatigue.

Were they not trained well enough, or were they over trained?

I noticed the wideouts slowing down and looking back for the ball. Do we have an arm strength problem? I would much rather scare the defense with an overthrown deep ball than to throw short for a contested catch.

Yeah. He will/has learned that this is Tech and nothing is ever won until it’s over.
I've been to that same game at least a dozen times in my life. I still have bad memories of the home collapse against Miami when we had the game pretty well in hand (not the away bubble screen game).

Hell, we lost to VT because Sneezy decided to punch VT's QB after a huge 3rd down stop.

We got NO penetration on defense. I only remember one blitz, in the second half, and Plummer read it well. Our blocking was horrible. The plays were there with blocking.

We appeared to get physically dominated on the lines. I have no clue how our rosters compare. Maybe Louisville got a bunch of transfers in from factories, don't know. I hope that is what it is and that they don't have mediocre lines and we are just less physical and have poorer form. We will see.

1) Offense was very good for a first game. Most of the players that touched the ball were playing together for the first time. They will get better. 2 clutch mistakes or we likely win the game

2) Defense was both good and awful in the same game; 1/11 on 3rd down is great but everything else was awful. I think the DBs will clean it up but worried about front 6.

I personally had fun at the game… obviously disappointed that we staked ourselves to a big lead and couldn’t stop them or score from that point. We were basically blanked in the 2nd half… hard to really count a garbage-time TD against prevent.

Observations:
1) I need to study a depth chart. Historically
I’ve known every player… but with all this transfer bullshit I just quit keeping up with it. I didn’t know like any of our skill position guys.

2) No pass rush = tough season… last year we had some dudes on defense and could really pressure a QB. Louisville QB won’t even have to wash his jersey before next week’s game. That spells major problems for the season.

3) Tackling was trash. You expect some of that in the first game, but this was ridiculous. Louisville made a consistent effort to stretch the field horizontally, both in how they ran the ball and quick passes out wide. We couldn’t tackle in space and it probably cost us the game to be honest.

4) Their kicker came to play, ours did not. That chippy field goal miss was huge. It would have changed coaching decisions and potentially the outcome.

5) Running on 1st down in the 2nd half was so predictable. We got ourselves behind the sticks consistently with runs between the tackles that were fruitless. I was wanting to see play-action on 1st down so bad. Did have the feel of playing not to lose vs. playing to win in the 2nd half. We’re simply not good enough to do that yet. Faulkner will learn from this.

6) Key deserves some credit. We didn’t win… so some won’t be able to get behind this thought. I remember the past few years thinking, “if only we had a team that played clean, disciplined football.” This was game one with essentially an all new coaching staff. We had no penalties that I can remember. Certainly no meaningful ones. Also no plays where guys were clearly doing the wrong thing. The guys lined up properly and played hard all game. Do we still need to continue upgrading overall team talent and depth? Sure! Do we need to make more plays overall? Sure! Still was pleased with improvements to the product on the field after one game, despite the ultimate outcome being a negative one.

Have to keep in mind that Louisville is a sure fire bowl team, and we hung with them until the very end. Really were only one more big play from winning the game.

Go Jackets!!

even my 9 year old son was like... why do they just run into them and not hold on with their arms?.. he was counting missed tackles on the replay and got to like 5 on one play
You didn't apparently see enuf of P-nut/Long. To supersize, not you.

From the big picture, it looks like Key and Faulkner want to run a physical offense that can pound the ball inside. We don't have the roster for that and will need time to get those pieces in place. If they can develop that smash mouth run game with speed receivers on the outside; this will be a fun team to watch; but it may take a few seasons to build that roster.

I don’t know who any of our players are either and I follow GT football regularly…obviously.

Don’t like this era of transfer portal.
Same. I recognized probably fewer than half the names. Hard to know who the players are anymore beyond the QB as a casual fan. And now when they announce a player on TV, it's not anything interesting about the player, like where they're from, what they're majoring in, etc. It's constantly "X, the transfer from Y". The transfer from Alabama, the transfer from Texas A&M, the transfer from Louisville. Oh the two transfers from Texas A&M connected on a pass, isn't that cute. Oh the transfer from Louisville really wants to score on his former team. I don't give a öööö where they transferred from!!

Surprised to see all the negative sentiment in this thread. Yeah, it was a loss and it hurt to blow that lead, but there were more positives in that game than I’ve seen in a while. Seems like many of you were expecting a 7-9 win season, which I guess explains your disappointment. I wasn’t expecting any more than a 4-5 win season in this rebuilding year, and we were a few bad plays away from a W against a decent L-ville squad on a neutral field, which is far better than expected. It hurt to be so close and get the L, but we’re looking much improved in several aspects. Looking forward to the season ahead for the first time in a while…
Personally, I don’t think Louisville is that good … I hope they prove me wrong.

Likewise. I know less about the roster of this team than any other Tech team of recent memory, particularly the skill positions. It reminds me somewhat of when college basketball became the one-and-done league. Granted there are fewer players to keep up with, but I stopped caring as much about knowing every player.
