Practice Today

I really like hearing that the players are buying in. Hopefully it's true of the OL as it seems to be of the RBs and QBs
Not being critical of your post, but nothing in dems' post suggests that only certain players have bought in. Why would you wonder about the OL? Especially with some of the articles and comments they've made?

fo' real! when's the last time we had someone take a kick back to the house...in a BIG game?
I think the last time it happened was Jonathan Smith in 2003.

And it is about time we put some playmakers back to return punts. This business of putting walk ons back there was incredibly inane.

Great post, Dem!

Thanks for the insight for us out-of-towners!

Speaking of returners (punt and KO), I would love to see some playmakers back there. Having walk-ons back there was a serious waste of opportunity, imo, the last few years.

In my opinion, the worst example of this was not having Calvin Johnson return kickoffs. Returning a kickoff is the only time you could have him on the field with a team full of blockers in front of him, able to read the entire field and have at least a 10 yard headstart running with the football. It would have been deadly. (Returning punts is different. You can get killed returning punts, however kickoffs are quite a bit different.)

I'm very excited to have playmakers back on the return team (young or old doesn't matter, the point is to have talent returning the kicks).

As always, thanks for your insights.

I'm sure I've missed it, however, when will Allen be able to play?

Two quick questions. How do the backups on the OL look? Do the DB's look better this year in man coverage than last year?

Definitely need better players out there, but Calvin on punt return would have been a big risk... His size would have left him open to some really nasty hits. However, you gotta have some playmakers back there. If you just get 1 return/season it's still worth it..

My recommendation

My recommendation was to have Calvin returning KICKOFFS, not punts. That's why I pointed out that punts are much more dangerous. Calvin shouldn't have been risked on punts, but I think KICKOFFS would've been a great way to inject his talent into the game.

The OL is still learning. They dont look bad and I think they will be fine as the season progresses, I am more concerned with their pass blocking then run blocking. Even the freshman Uzzi and McRae are doing well.

The DB's look pretty good, we are young but they are talented. Jahi is ready for a great senior season, our 2 safeties will be fine. The one who needs to step up is Butler.

- This offense will drive people crazy, it drove me crazy watching it, the players seem to enjoy it and have bought into the system. Spoke with Bebe the other day and he was excited about it, he will have some big plays this year and is turning into an absolute beast out there, DB's will hate it when he comes blocking.

Just wait until you watch the game on TV. The camera men follow the wrong runner down the field for 5-15 yards before they realize the QB kept it and is heading down the other sideline with the ball all by himself. :laugher:

Camera followed the wrong guy on TV about 3-5 times a game when Sewak was still at Georgia Southern.

That walk on your talking about would have probably seen a lot of action in the a-back spot had he not gotten hurt. just because ur a walk on doesnt mean u cant play. it was the system gailey ran for kickoffs that prevented anyone from takin it to the house.

Correct, Tyler Evans is not just an average walkon. He would of seen plenty of time on the field this year and might of ended up starting at A-back with Roddy. We ran a safe return unit which doesnt set up well for big returns because of that particular blocking scheme. Out of the top 10 returners in the ACC last year there was only 4 touchdowns returned, 2 by Eddie Royal. So its not like every team gets TD's on returns, the main thing is to set up good position and hold on to the ball which Tyler did very well. He averaged 9.3 yards per return which was more then CJ Spiller from Clemson. He was not just some walkon thrown out there to be nice. Tyler is a solid player and a great kid.

and i recall a huge return during the 90 year maybe that saved our ass in a game, and the guy was a WALK ON.

Yup...Kevin Tisdel. He had a big return against Clemson and a TD later that season against Duke.

Does anybody know what he's up to these days?

**Ross gave him a 'ship after that year, IIRC.

thats the guy. he did get his scholly for the next year. it has to be supremely satisfying to knock off such a run in that position!
