QB Situation

Part of reason King was mediocre was Buster decided to stop calling plays that were working.

That being said, Haynes King has now fooled two coaching staffs in three straight years that he deserved to be qb1 in practice and has folded under actual game pressure. Huge black eye by Key’s staff to have two years of failure on tape of this öööö and still start him. If Pyron is worse than King, WE ARE ööööED. Pyron needs to start going forward.
Did we watch the same game? Ultimately King is still young but he was very very good. I was expecting to be underwhelmed and came away pretty impressed. He will win some games for us.

One of those years, he threw 35 total passes, completing 22 of them. For all practical purposes, last year was his freshman season. I think it's a wee bit overdramatic to say he had "two years of failure on tape."

I can only assume that some folks were just dead set on Pyron being the guy and King is going to have to be the second coming of Mahomes in order to shake them from that conviction.

King had plenty of questionable deep throws. Throwing into tight coverage, or overthrowing... Most of his deep balls were prayers.

My main takeaways from the game though were that the defense got gashed for 5+ yards on first downs way too much. And the offense had way too many ineffective runs up the middle.

He had balls dropped by Louisville that had they been caught people would be saying other things about King's performance. Honestly, though, the decision to go for that 4th down with 3 timeouts is öööö, only thing I can think is that key can't do math and thought we were down 2 scores, that's more troubling to me than anything king did

Probably just saw a defense that had already given up 23 points in the half and had like half the starters exit with injury. It was a debatable call, but I think one I would have made as well. I liked our chances of getting 6 yards or whatever more than I liked our chances of getting a quick stop.

And yet they did get the stop and we didn't get the 6 yards

Got the stop when they were already in FG range and were more incentivized to play it safe. I don't think it's accurate to assume they would have made the exact same play calls from any spot on the field.

You also don't have a crystal ball at the time you're making these calls. Obviously it didn't work out, but I don't think it was an outrageous decision given what we knew at the time. Even if you do punt and stop them, you're still going to have to actually score, which is going to require getting some conversions. You're probably doing so without any timeouts as well. There weren't really any good options at that point.

Obviously no good options, he just chose the worst one

King had a great 2nd quarter. He was tentative and held the ball far too long on the critical plays that could have won the game. I give him a C+. The line was a C-. Running backs were A+ in the 2nd quarter and a D the other three quarters. Receivers get a C+. They showed speed, but must not have run great routes to get separation since King held the ball too long.

Defense was excellent except for one drive in the first half, a solid B. The second half was a D. We had defended their outside and inside zone blocking game. So, they came out and not split two wide, used quick throws, and believed their skill players would bat our DB’s in space. They were right. We should have double covered those wideouts after the first drive of the second half.

Agree to disagree. Have seen it happen plenty of times where teams punt there and never see the ball again, particularly when your defense is struggling and the other team knows they need a first down or two to salt the game away. Going to have to score at some point. Might as well try to do it when you're guaranteed to have the ball.

I felt like our defense was tentative. Seemed to wait for the ball carrier to come to them rather than pursuing. And unfortunately, that was often 7 or 8 yards downfield. Also, when we did make contact, the tackling was horrid. Play calling in the second half was poor. We had very little success up the middle but kept calling it.

Lmao - if we punt there, we don't get the ball back unless it's a KO after a TD. Our D didn't make a single stop in 30 minutes. Going for it was the right call.

If we had responded to Brent Key’s end of the year last year the way he has responded to Zach Pyron’s efforts that helped him win games Key would not be a head coach tonight.

As a man of the cloth I always assumed you refrained from hitting the bottle. Now I’m not so sure. What the hell are you trying to say here?
